but i think we should be really clear about who we're dealing with. reporter: i want to go back to something from a couple of weeks ago because we didn't get to talk to you after the immigration vote. you went to foxconn. you had said repeatedly on the question of discharge petition, you said you wanted to take a route that had a chance of something -- [inaudible] -- and you had a bill to get to 190-some votes. why in your mind did you think that those pieces of legislation had a pathway to get to law, especially on the second one? mr. ryan: i know the president would have signed both of those. so what i mean when i say a pathway, i know he will not sign the dream act on its own. he's made that really clear. but i do know, spoken with him many times about this, he would have signed either goodlatte one or goodlatte two. so that's what i mean when i say. that he would have signed that bill into law if we could get it to him. i think the democrats chose not to participate in this debate for various reasons. reporter: 121. mr. ryan: members got the votes

i would think, really? or i remember one reporter went on the air in denver and we all laughing about it, saying, pat schroeder couldn't be here tonight, her plaid dress was at the cleaners. and -- really? there's always somebody who believes it and they always had stories like that. i believe more than mentoring, we would laugh. you either cry or laugh. you may as well laugh. and say eventually it will change -- we hope. >> did you get advice about getting on to certain committees and how to go about doing that? >> oh man, oh man, no. i had already figured out what i wanted to do. i figured out i wanted to be in post office and civil service, because we had a lot of civil servants in denver. and judiciary. but what i really wanted, because i figured all the money was going through armed services. and i also knew how to fly a plane and i figured there weren't any women and it was very important to have a woman's viewpoint, too. it's all about protecting women and children and they're sucking up all the money
