i said i just got back from vietnam. she is said i'm so sorry. i'm from new jersey, i don't understand any of this. i cannot serve you. i'll take you around the back and get you something. i said, no thanks. i left and went back half a mile to the post. got a hamburger. and then six months later just about july 4th of 1968, the accommodations act was signed. i went down to that place and said, hot dog please, yes, sir, you got it. no problem. and that was the beginning of the end of segregation. it was the beginning of the end of accommodations rerestrictions. and what i have often said to people, we just didn't release black people from the problem, we released white people from a problem. this was a problem for both of us. i took that attitude into my career. one thing led to another. i went to vietnam a second time. i went to korea. the third time away from my family. and i just kept moving up. >> did you ever think to yourself, you had prepared to give the last full measure of devotion to this country if and you were injured in vietnam. do you

i said, daddy, i think i really want to. he said, well, let's talk to somebody. so a recruiter came to our house. she sat down in our living room, and she was very honest about everything. i would be applying for the army school of nursing nurse program -- army student nurse program. that's how you got involved with it, especially because you didn't go to the walter reid rain program. she also said, now, there's a 95% chance that she'll go to vietnam, and i just looked at her. i thought, not me. i'm not going to vietnam, but the army sounds really still good. so i did sign the contract, so to speak, for the army student nurse program. i was inducked as a pfc. so that senior year of nursing school, i did get paid $300 a month. i was loving it. i thought that was terrific. i graduated in august of 19689 from nursing school, and i immediately did a postgraduate course with intensive care, surgical care and coronary care which was extremely valuable in the rest of my 43 years of nursing. it also put me where i was when i got into the army. we -- i was commissioned to

i said, no, let him go. what we're starting to see is -- i don't know why, because when we came back from vietnam, nobody could care less when we came back. it was -- it just didn't matter. a lot of times you went to vietnam, you were stupid, that type of thing. so what we're seeing now is people that say they went to vietnam and hadn't been. and i live in cobb county and then i know it's probably my time, i need to go home, right? but the guy that had -- he said he was a purple heart winner. and he went to apply for something and they asked for his form 214 and he was in the military, but he never had a purple heart. yet he was getting all of these things for being a purple heart. he was inside some kind of parade with his wife on a flatbed 18 wheeler that got hit by a truck. it all came out for that. and so i remember him going to court. he said -- any time a guy says i was all over, i said, all over where? every vietnam vet can tell you exactly where they were. they were never all over. if anybody can say

afghanistan -- [inaudible] [inaudible] >> i don't think it's in anyone interest or afghanistan to descend into civil war and even the taliban, as we hear it has said it has no interest in that. the afghan people have no interest in that. everyone i heard from today expressed a strong desire for peace. i also think when you look at the region, when you look at afghanistan's neighbors and other regional powers have an interest in afghanistan and perhaps influence with different groups in afghanistan, none of them have interest in civil war that could produce refugees flooding into other countries, extremism and terrorism directed potentially at other countries, drug trafficking spilling out even more, the consequences of that future are literally in no one's interest so that's one. second, as i said before, the taliban says it wants certain things putting international regulation, including international support for afghanistan, including the ability for leaders to travel freely and if it were to provoke civil war, none of those things would be possible so i think there are lots of things arguing against that and again, as i said a couple of times a
