i start assembling a cast of characters that i think would be interesting to write about in general and then if you have an imaginary space, what would happen if you put them on the stage and start letting them bump into each other to see what happens. not something any writer or teacher is going to recommend how you proceed into a novel because it is chaotic and it is a tight rope but it is the only thing that keeps it interesting for me. i have many friends who are successful writers who are incredibly disciplined. one book a year or 18 months and they have recurring characters, joe detective or jill detective who are very successful, people love the books and it is bank bank paying. i cannot work that way. for my mind i would get the sense that i was recycling. secondly, it is fun to start from scratch for the characters because you learn about them. what happens if you have a recurring character, come franchise characters if they are successful, you start writing, all your readers of read your other books about that character, you don't get to rebuild that character and if you do yo
