i started to get 30 e mails. they discovered through the website an e mail which would come directly tow me. i started to figure it out when all the questions were the same. they -- it was the questions which they had to write their essay on. one young woman wrote me and said, i don't know if i have time to read the book can you tell me who the samurai is and where the garredin is? i went back and put it in first person and realized it started to work. what i did was put it in the journal entries and it became what i should have known from the beginning because a began my colleges career as a film major wanting to make films not knowing i wanted to tell stories on the page and not on the screen. what i did was a stepped back and this is something one of my group members always tells me. where's at camera? what's happening? see from the camera's ankle. i realized he was too far away from everything. this book was different than the first book because in the first book i had so many voices and this book everything had to be seen from steven's point of view. when i narrowed it down the story told itself much the process of a writer is elizabeth said, you cannot be afraid to make mistakes. that's the writing process. we are making a lot of mistakes i am constantly rewriting and looking at something and saying, i could say it with less words. i could look at something and say, she would kill me if i did this and i would change it. there a

animal control for about six years, i spent a year in the kennel and then the office came up and i startedoing it and it really fit. it's really the job for me. and animals i have to handle and i know what i am doing, i rarely get scared. so once i have a deadline, then i have to start thinking about it. and it came to me, you know. i gave them two ideas, or i told them the titles of two shows. they liked one over the other, and i thought, "okay, that's what i'll do." and--but it is a process, you know. when i started the work-- i started about three months ago-- i could see now, midway through the work, that it's gonna change and get even better, you know. but it is a process, you know, from the first image until the last. you know, a lot of things, a lot of thought goes into it. and it's a matter of doing it and learning as you do. when you have a series of photographs, do you begin the series by taking images and then building on those? or do you sit down initially and say, "here's the scope of what i would like to explore? no, i do the former, you know. i start out small and then go on to the bigger picture. and--and with this show, it's like that, you know. it started out with just a few ideas, and now they're becoming a few personal ideas that are taking on more universal tones. i know you don't want to talk

well, i had many false starts. and unfortunately, things began to happen to me that got me into trouble. and finally, one of the things that got me into big trouble was that i had a wife who got sick of being threatened, then, of being killed every time i got drunk. and so she called the police and they took me to a mental hospital. and that was a big step along the way. and my wife also said i don't want anything to do with this guy anymore because she had been tortured by this tremendous unpredictability when i was intoxicated. i think as part of as i listen to paul talk about his journey, i'm reminded of my dad's journey as a recovering alcoholic, who when we say many pathways to recovery dr. kirk, he never went through treatment, and similar experiences for him that he found himself in a ditch, and that said he said his first prayer in his life since a child that said if you just let me get home to my children, i will never take another drink. and 40, 50 years later, never took another drink. so i think there ar
