as i thought back over those years, i came to realize that i envy all of you today. i envy that you were on the front end of this wonderful, challenging, rewarding, sometimes gut wrenching, but also uplifting adventure of being a lawyer. so i thought i would share with you today four observations or lessons that i have learned over this time about what it means to be a lawyer and what being a lawyer has taught me about life in our country. so observation number one. we are all better than our worst moment. but sometimes we are not quite as good as we think we are either. now, as bright, talented, and driven as all of you are right now, you need to give yourself the space to develop integrate lawyers. you are not born one. as rigorous as your education was here, there is still for you to learn, more dimensions of your lawyer early to be developed. i learned this the hard way not long after i graduated from law school. i was working at a big firm in atlanta. we were working on a case involving the failure of one of those giant cranes they have in sports, the failure of

speaker, i rise today to honor the life of lieutenant deputy kevin main hart. mr. westerman: he was killed during a traffic stop on may 12, 2017. lieutenant mainhart had served as a police officer for 20 years in west memphis, arkansas, before returning to yale county five years ago to protect and serve his hometown. he lived a life of service that his wife, two sons, can be proud of. while words will never be able to console the pain and grief his family, community, and state of arkansas feel, we can take solace in the words of christ who said that great love hath no man than this that he lay down his life for his friends. yale county has lost a true friend and servant. i thank lieutenant mainhart for his service and sacrifice and send my most sincere condolences to his freabdsfrends, family, and all those a -- friends, family, and all those affected by this senseless act of violence. mr. speaker, i yield back. the speaker pro tempore: for what purpose does the gentleman from arkansas wish to be recognized? >> unanimous consent to address the house for one minute.

i mean no disrespect to any lawyers in the room with us today or any graduates that might be going on to law school. i was just enamored with flight. i was able to enlist my rotc experience to become an aviation officer in the u.s. army. that means i went on to become a helicopter pilot. i attended flight school right here in alabama. it is located in the southeast part of the state. i have very many fond memories of fort rucker. it is where i experienced true southern hospitality. i immediately fell in love with the state and with the people. alabama always held a special place in my heart. i went on to serve almost eight years on active duty as an army aviator, often have an -- often having the opportunity to come back to alabama for training. i would like to share with you a couple of things i learned along the way that i hope you can apply to your own life as you head out to the real world. the first and most important is to be open to new experiences. i had no idea becoming an army pilot would profoundly change my life and impact me. as someone who has moved 21 times in her caree

today. not just in the stands, but beyond. when i think of those who have gone before, i think of just a half century ago, a young man from alabama did just what you did. he answered the call to put on the uniform and he was sitting right where you are sitting. he graduated from the united states naval academy in 1967 and not too long after that, he sailed across the pacific and joined the fight for freedom in the jungles of vietnam. one day, assigned it to a small boat unit, he was working with his team to extract a group of navy seals from behind enemy lines when his boat was ambushed. he was thrown overboard and wounded by shrapnel, but still found within himself the strength and courage to swim back to his nearly empty boat and provide cover fire for his brothers. despite his own injuries, he personally attended to the wounded. he refused medical assistance until all his brothers in arms have been treated. he was awarded the silver star for his fearless bravery and leadership under fire. 50 years ago, he was sitting right where y

an i rise today in opposition -- and i rise today in opposition to this so-called working families flexibility act. a bill that would hurt not help working people. this bill would ensure workers have less time, less flexibility, and less money under this proposal, workers would forego -- forgo the overtime they earn today in exchange for comp time in the future, except workers can't choose when they can use that time. there is nothing stopping a boss who would deny a worker from using their comp time to care for a sick child or attend a school event. the only bill, the only thing that this bill does is provides more flexibility for bosses while take away hard-earned overtime pay that many workers rely on to make ends meet. this is an attempt to undermine hard-fought 80-year-old worker protections guaranteed by the fair labor standards act. if congress wanted to give working families more flexibility, we should give them earned paid sick days. combat pay discrimination. give them a say in their work schedules. and raise the minimum wage. these are the policies that working families truly need t

speaker, i rise today in support of the rule and underlying legislation. as a former federal and state prosecutor, i often hear how americans value and respect our law enforcement officers, firefighters, and first responders. talk about their heroism, selflessness, willing toness to protect and serve no matter the cost. these individuals are truly the fabric that holds our communities together. however, in recent years a violent and disturbing trend has developed. law enforcement officers, firefighters, and first responders are increasingly being targeted for violence and cruelty based solely on the uniform they wear. according to the national law enforcement officers memorial fund, there were 64 police shooting deaths in 2016. that number is 56% higher than the previous year. the national association of police organizations also notes that ambush-style killings of law enforcement officers increased by 167% in 2016. allowing this appalling trend to continue unchecked is not only unacceptable, it is also indefensible. congress must take concrete steps to add

speaker, i rise today on behalf of the international students and the u.s. institutions of higher education they attend. they have been unfairly penalized by the trump administration through unconstitutional and illegal immigration executive orders. i urge my colleagues and the administration to recognize the vital contribution these international students make to our country. international students have spent time in the united states, become ambassadors when they return home, sharing an appreciation of our values, counteracting stereotypes about americans and the united states and enhancing respect for cultural differences and democratic norms. international students contribute to the economic well-being of the united states. according to the association of international education, during the last academic year, international students and their families supported 400,000 jobs and contributed $33 billion to our domestic economy. in my district alone, 4,978 international students and families contributed $137 million to our local economy, supporting 1,725 job
