i want to thank you very much. one year ago, when i came and reported to you, the board unanimously approved a short line of credit for our station. that was a huge and vote of confidence for our staff and volunteers at the station, the mission of the station, and the community that has supported the station. i want to specifically thank those who insisted that i come before you and ask you for that line of credit. he wanted to make sure you fully understood the financial situation of the station. to make us accountable to you and fully reporting to you about where things stood. it is the right way to do things and it has been beneficial for the station area one year on, i think that the confidence that you placed in the station and in the community that supports it has really proven out. we had a remarkable year of listener support. just in the last two quarters of the fiscal year, six months after the line of credit was approved, we saw a huge outpouring of listener support that meant that we ended the year in a 1

i want to emphasize to people here tonight, we talk about students, but i also want to emphasize that looking beyond statistics, looking at the individual students, the impact you'll make with their lives, they're building relationships with college track staff like omar. i ran into marshall's daughters last week in san francisco. they remember the days in college track oakland when i used to babysit them while marshall handled stuff at college track. it's those moments that just by providing a center in san francisco, you're providing memories and not only that, you're not only providing memorying for them, you're providing a foundation for these students to grow build on as they grow to have families of their own, not just careers. another thing i thought about is that i want to leave this world better than what i started when i first got here so to do that, i have to come to events like this. i have to encourage people to give to programs like college track and think about the impact you're having on individual students' lives. i still talk to my trends that were in the program --

i want to make that clear. i do have a concern about moving forward this item out of committee today. given the fact that there is still some questions that remain and i agree wholeheartedly with supervisor kim as i was watching the hearing who indicated that if there are those questions, the mou was the point that you were during to when you made this statement. it is important for us to resolve those questions in committee before we send an item out. to the full board. that is why we have this committee structured to make sure these items are fully vetted and given the complexity and the boot volume of the document we're talking about, we need to make sure that there is a full vetting of those items. if there is a question about the resolution of something, the place to resolve that is here in committee. that said, i think that it is important for us to note that procedurally, while we as a body are not able to change or amend the dda, it is important to underscore that we as the board have to improve adda. we

before i leave, i want to tell you one thing. people have talked about the out-migration of american -- african americans. i talk to african-americans and tell them, i came from chicago. i could walk through a place in chicago, the south side, larger this -- then the city and see black people everywhere. you can see the young children sitting. they say, really, they cannot believe it. that speaks when they hear that and they start leaving for. speaking to desire we have. the need and desire to belong. i think to some extent when they hear that they say that was a place where you belong to. we have to explain to them many of them migrated or their relatives did from the south. they came from black communities. they came from black areas. while they are in a place that has an out migration, they have an opportunity i did not have. growing up in chicago i could only touch and be touched by african-americans. they have the opportunity to touch african-americans, to touch jewish people, to touch the chinese and gay people, straight peo

just a couple of quick things that i did want to touch on, is a little uwasi update. i think most of you know that there has been cuts at the federal level on uwsai funding. this last year, we lucked out in that san francisco and the core cities remained whole, which is wonderful. so we will continue to have our $34 million of funding regionally for this current year. next year, it's questionable. what we're hearing from washington is that perhaps all of the tier 2 cities or regions will be cut out this year. if that's the case, we still may be ok next year but i think we need to be thinking long term about how we sustain the efforts that we have begun and make sure that we can continue to become more and more prepared and ready for the big one when it does happen because funding at the federal level is definitely declining. san francisco, at this point, is in good shape and in fact the approval authority last week voted to keep the core city allocations of oakland, san jose, and san francisco, $1 million each before any other funding is expended so that's a very posit
