i just want to thank everyone for coming today. this is amazing. i started working on this masonic boulevard at the issues that we were having, to safety issues we were having, in 2005. there was a group of us, michael, dug, a bunch of us who came out at night when it was rainy and cold. we had our signs up to reduce the speed to 25 miles. because if you remember before then, it was a lot faster. it was our little mini freeway. we were out here it, day and night, going across the street, up and down masonic and working on the state level to reduce it to 25 miles an hour. and then that happened. we are excited about it. we knew we needed to do more. and then we had the tragedy of a bicyclist getting killed. he was riding riding his bike in 2010 and he was killed by a car. it made everyone sad, furious, and also, gave us the power to keep moving. we needed to make sure that we needed to change masonic. needed to be changed not only for people who rode their bikes on masonic, not only for the kids that are at san francisco day school that walk around m

these are crises in our society that i wanted to respond to. >> before i play this john kelly sound bite to remind everybody exactly what you're talking about, just remind us of your story. obviously it's a long story, but you are a refugee and immigrant. you came with your family from vietnam, right? when was it? how difficult was it to assimilate back then? >> well, it was 1975. i was 4 years old and my parents were in their 40s. of course the vietnam war ended, and we were on the losing side, so we fled as refugees to the united states and ended up in a refugee camp in pennsylvania in 1975. and while it was a great gesture of hospitality on the part of the united states, what happened to us personally was that i was separated from my parents at 4 years of age in order to leave that refugee camp. and that's a very traumatic experience, and it stayed with me for a very long time as well as this understanding that refugees and immigrants are in need of hospitality and help. and, again, it seems like at this time in the united states and many other parts of the world, that that sense of h

i also want to thank sharon, and joelle. i remember when coach kerr was trying to explain this horrible 40 point loss that the warriors had sustained. and you said it kind of reminds me that the kid brought home the report card to the father, and the father said, what was it son? regard or ignorance? and the son said, i don't know and i don't care. when i got the job at ingleside, and i lived eight blocks away, i wondered if i would find the staff that knew and did care. when people would hear ingleside, they'd go oh, and you'd feel like they had this real emotion java tachment to the station. i found that the cops at i think will -- emotional attachment to the station. i found that the caps at ingleside have worked at the station for after average of 20 years. we find consistently that if all politics are local, all policing is local, and i find that it's a really exciting time to be at ingleside, and a really exciting time to be part of the city. so i thank you for this honor, and i wish all to be here to hear this. >> pres

so i want you to think about the different pieces of what i just said. the first is gender. let's imagine zoot suiters juxtaposed to another popular icon of the wartime american woman, rosie the riveter. most of us have seen this image, right? rosie the riveter flashing her bicep. "we can do it" dressed in heavy-duty work clothes, sort of embodying and signifying this idea that american women are doing the work needed to win the war, to fuel the war effort. it's this kind of female masculinity. and here i will offer you a brief theoretical footnote. jack halberstam has written a terrific book, a number of years old now, called "female masculinity," and in the introduction to that book, he writes about james bond. seems far afield, but halberstam writes about james bond as the kind of heroic, masculine figure, right? handsome, dressed to the nines all the time, gets all the ladies, uses the secret spy tools and such, but that james bond's heroic masculinity is only seen as being the man's man when juxtaposed to other masculinities in the james bond movies and books, like for
