there's no way i will make a better call than they will. d: it is said you spent a fair amount of time recruiting good investment specials. is that a big part of your job, recruiting others to come to citadel? ken: i have interviewed ballpark 10,000 people in my career. so recruiting -- like, i will leave today and do two interviews today, two tomorrow. i am always looking for talent. david: if somebody is watching this and they say, i will be interviewed by ken griffin, what should they do in the interview to make you like them? i will look through. i give them to my law clerk, they do three sets, i do 12 sets in an oral argument. they will write a memo and i will read their memo and we will discuss it and all that has happened before the oral argument. so the oral argument is for us to ask questions. it is very hard for the lawyers. for the lawyers. because, they are not sure what it is going to be. one judge starts to nod and the other is frowning and oh, my god. it's very hard to rate -- very hard. what is a good question? a good question is, i don't know the answer when i ask it. but i think the lawyer can help me out. i believe that it is relevant to the decision in the case. usually, that is what you are getting. and so i might ask a question which is the opposite of what i am thinking at the time. because i want to find out with the other person's best answer is to what i think is the best argument over here. that happens a lot. you might ask a question sometimes to signal to your colleagues where you are coming from so the

i always have. they will do my model of -- my intellectual model is when free market forces rule the roost when incentives, work, sand and dust is in place, the dollar is steady, inflation rate is low. i think it's unlimited. look, from the end of world war ii to the year 2,000, i believe the baseline is 1947 when the statistics were in place. usa grew 3 1/2% a year after inflation, tremendous. and we hit a slump for whatever reasons in the last 16, 18 years since 2000. we hit a slump with democrats and republicans in charge. i think we can get back to that 3 1/2% long term trend line. president talks about getting to 4, 4 1/2%. i don't see why not. i don't believe in secular stagnation. there are no categorical imperatives for policies and creating of opportunities for everybody. i don't see why we can't continue. i understand over time the business cycle will produce its own booms and busts, but really i think we can get back to that long-term trend line. that's one of our goals and i think it's an across-t

so i think that the -- they will be better off. i think the city will be better off. if you look at there is an alliance of public power cities, cities that have public power. and if you look at that alliance, public power in every single account is less than what pg&e charges. so i think will be better off, and that money that we get, because, you know, it is revenue-generate, we can build underground in places that are important and that are sensitive to fire. i think the employees will be better off. we probably will need more and better -- more employees. i think there are opportunities. but this is a prime time. and i think san francisco is in a very unique position to do that. with the board and certainly our mayor being on board with this, this is our time. and so i'm very excited about doing that. and because i feel as strongly as i do, that the power should be held with the people, then i will do everything. i will read everything. i will do whatever is necessary because i think it is a legacy for our mayor. it's also a legacy for all of you. and our city. wh

i will share with you a personal story and i couldn't have made this up. my 24-year-old son who thinks thanks to a cas alumni healthcare insurance had a colonoscopy yesterday. when he was having problems and he lives in boston he went to his pcp and had some initial testing and the recommendation was a colonoscopy. now i am concerned as a parent. he goes to the colonoscopy yesterday and describes how wonderfully prepped is, i don't know if any of you have had that and then he calls me to say everything was okay. all you feel is that sense of relief. it was about two hours later i said, hey by the way was the gastro knowledges in network or out of network and the answer was i don't know. so here i am getting ready and i'm thinking the know it all guy and my son didn't ask the right question. if that level of complexity did it get to him we have work to do. i want to speak to the issue of the market being broken. i want to share with you some of the reality of emergency physicians. every day 15% of the people who i take care of are still uninsured. 30% of th

ken: right, and i will get into one of them. d: you were president of the math club at high school. so i guess you are pretty good at math. ken: i was pretty good at math. pretty good at math. david: so you got into harvard. when you got into harvard, did you decide to go right away or did you want to see if other schools would accept you? ken: that was a complicated story. ken: my father's business partner was a princeton graduate. and princeton was my first choice. and my father had a falling out with his business partner just before the time i was to go to college. picking where to go to college. my dad said it would break his heart if i went to princeton. and, i went to harvard. [laughter] ken: one of my partners at citadel, who i have had the pleasure of working with for two decades, served on princeton's investment committee oversight and has done wonders to help princeton feel better. david: ok. and if i am not i will defer to somebody in the audience. w. there was an article that is been circulating a lot. i wrote a few weeks ago in the new york times about the hygiene hypothesis. it's poorly named to some extent. one of the things that researchers realized was returning to the image of the ones and zeros of all the inputs that are around us are immune system benefits enormously by interacting with those viruses and bacteria with those parasites. most of them will do us no harm. many of them will live with us innocuously and if you would do us harm. but in any case, our immune system learned goes to boot camp by interacting with the natural world. for a while, this started at the hygiene hypothesis when it was observed that people who are in overly sanitize environment got more allergies. but it turns out that the hygiene hypothesis had more recently been expanded into what some call the old france mechanism. that really, what you need, when we sanitize our environments we are not merely blocking the problematic pathogens but we may

i will say a couple things on this point. a lot of people have misunderstood or, you know, just don't agree or philosophical differences regarding economic analysis and economic modeling. finish i know there's this idea that 2018 was a good year because we got 3% growth, but it's a sugar high, that's all going to go away. but i want to rebut that. what we've done is not a kind of one-time, you know, tax rebate rebate -- i can't see you over there. or maybe i can move up. this is not a one-time cash tax rebate kind of thing, and it just goes away. what we did was we lowered marginal tax rates particularly on the business side, large and small companies, and this was the bulk of the plan. now, there are individual tax cuts, and some of those were rate reductions and some of them weren't. but the heartover of it -- heart of it is on the business side and lowering the corporate rate from, as you know, 35 to 21%, 100% expensing, new international rules. we want territorial so you don't have to get double taxed on your overseas prof

there's no way i will make a better call than they will. t is said you have spent a very good amount of time recruiting good investment specials. is that a date part of your job, recruiting others to come to citadel? ken: i have interviewed ballpark 10,000 people in my career. so recruiting -- i will leave today and do two interviews today, two tomorrow. i am always looking for talent. david: if somebody is watching this and they say, i will be interviewed by ken griffin, what should they do in the interview to make you like them? i will not say going forward we will not have as many cases or more cases than filed last year. it is not in of itself a particular output measure i am looking to compare. pete: one of the, i want to ask about the size and scope of the bureau, so some of the republican criticisms was it was too large of a footprint in the revelatory space, obviously your predecessor asked for zero dollars for the budget at one point and i am curious about the level of funding you are thinking of and the staffing, do you think it is at the size it should be an how do you think about reshaping the bureau going forward? dir. kraninger: what we are doing now inside of the bureau is a robust resource allocation discussion and a staffing plan. i have charged every manager to think about the resources they dollars for the budget at one need to do the job i have laid out for them. and i want to have that conversation about with the right staffing level is. i actually am not, i have no goal, there is no goal to reduce the staff and there is not a goal to increase the staff to the levels that were targeted
