nbc bay area's ian cull was on the scene and joins us now. ian. what happened? yeah. so somehow the los juniors mariscos in gilroy caught fire this morning and firefighters still don't know what sparked it. we do know that fire engines from gilroy, morgan hill, even san jose responded around 730. now, no one was hurt. luckily, and though the outside looks intact, firefighters say that there is serious damage inside. they had to break windows because they couldn't see through the thick black smoke. we spoke with a gas station employee across the street who dialed 911. really dark smoke coming out. i just curious, like, okay, if it's on fire, it's going to cause the whole gas station is going to be blown up easy because it's gas. yeah. scary situation there. ian, what makes investigators think this fire is suspicious? yeah. so when firefighters arrived, they say that the back door was open in the business had been closed since saturday. so a fire investigator spent much of the morning looking over the scene and the damage. they put up police tape after firefighters left

nbc bay area's ian cull joins us now. ian, what are these social workers calling for? yeah, and they say that they need more social workers now to prevent future tragedies. the group works for the county department of family and children's services, or dfcs, and they specifically brought up that case of baby phoenix. she was a three month old girl found in a south bay apartment littered with opioids in may of 2023, and died of a fentanyl overdose, the county said. officers and social workers had responded to the home multiple times before her death, even removing two other children from the home. ultimately, the baby's father was charged with child neglect. the group says the county didn't include social workers in the decisions on whether or not to remove a child from their family, and though that has been resolved, they say they worry the current lack of staffing could lead to similar tragedies in the future. when social workers are working, 150 hours are assigned over their case standards, and crisises in our community are not being responded to in a timely manner.
