we are back with ian bremer and anne-marie slaughter. ian, tell us what you make of this.his is the beginning of a chance for the afghan government to show whether it can hold its own and claiming that it is going to be able to take back kunduz from the taliban? >> sadly, i think they're done. the state department put out a statement a couple of hours ago saying that if the taliban wants legitimacy they have to stop the attacks. that's about what the america response is to some air strikes, too, but we're leaving, of course, as you know. so the taliban, i expect they're going to take over. the biden administration knows that, which is one of the reasons they decided to end the war because they thought it was a question of when, not if. but it's happening faster than white house advisers to biden had expected. this is an embarrassment to the united states. there's no question. but it's not a national security priority. that's why trump wanted out. that's why biden wants out, too. there are going to be a lot of people on the ground that are going to be under massive humanita

also political scientist ian bremer, president of g-zero media and the you're rare sha group. colonel, what does it say to you about the situation on the ground that the president is bringing in nearly double the number of troops he initially deployed last week? >> i tell you, pam, it's really a crisis situation. you have something here that is extremely dangerous for the people on the ground. it also shows that what we're dealing with is really a way in which we've got to do something more to get people out in terms of afghan interpreters. so what we have here is from a strategic standpoint a very difficult situation. we have a problem that in some ways was of our own making, but in other ways was a result of ineptitude and corruption in the afghan military. and the resulting mess that we're dealing with now is one in which there are really -- no good way out, that's what we see here. we have a problem that is partially of our own making, but it is a very difficult way to extract ourselves from this problem, and we have to find a way very quickly to do that. because it is a s

ian bremer joins us. the u.s. withdrawal does complicate a lot of relationships on the world stage.a really warming up to the taliban? if so, what's in it for beijing? >> yeah, they certainly are. i expect they will make afghanistan part of them in part they'll do that because it's a propaganda win after the united states has failed on the ground in kabul. they don't want to fail the state in afghanistan they would be concerned about the rise of islamic fundamentalism and support for uighur successionism in the etim movement this is something china is very concerned about. also because long term the potential for being able to exploit rare earth metals and developing infrastructure that matters for post fossil fuel energy production is something the chinese would be interested in though i will say the difficulty in creating that infrastructure and actually bringing that -- extracting those resources and bringing them to market is extraordinary. >> i was going to ask you, you mentioned down the road. we're familiar with the infrastructure dreams they have. can we talk about that plan

we spoke with a geopolitical analyst ian bremer last year and he said basically the way that the public ultimately reacts to what the biden administration has done here depends on whether there is american blood shed as it all unfolds to the extent that you can take us inside what you think the taliban's strategy or goals might be in that regard. >> reporter: that's a great question i think the taliban want to give a window of opportunity for the u.s. to get out of the country from what we're hearing right now, there hasn't been any direct conflict between the taliban and u.s. forces because they just want them out of there. and i think over the years the taliban have learned not to stoke things too much if they want to take back power. they know that if they sort of got into a conflict with even one u.s. serviceman in afghanistan the u.s. would then have to flex its muscles and it would be messy there so i think the taliban are quite content to let the americans get out of there and then take full control of the country without getting into some sort of fighting match with u.s. troops
