ian bremmer is here, he is the president and founder of eurasia group. the crisis in ukraine dominates headlines. the company's acting president said his forces were helpless to control. last week saw president obama travel to allied countries in asia. one of the key stops japan. ian bremmer is returning from a recent trip to that country and pleased to have him back at this table, welcome. good to have you. >> thank you. >> charlie: let me turn first and just talk about this obama trip to asia. a success? >> a success. >> charlie: because? well, first, he needed to make this trip. these were a number of ala lies of the united states that have felt that they have not been a priority, that they have been overlooked. obama went to japan four times and the japanese ambassador of the u.s. will make this clear, four times he has said he is committed to the alliance in japan -- with japan and that the east china sea issue is explicitly a part of that. they needed to hear that. it was very important in the meeting all the way through. the japanese liked it. the

our guest host is the asia director of the lesion -- ian bremmer costs -- ian bremmer's eurasia group i love the council on foreign relations comments. it is a remarkable monday. what was remarkable for you? a relativelyory is positive story in u.s. china relations and it has become negative. if you look at the hacking scandal. the trajectory is a little bit more concerning than it was a few weeks ago. >> what actually follows on from these five charges? what do we do? pick them up in shanghai? >> i don't think the chinese are going to overreact. people are talking about targeted sanctions from u.s. firms. i think that is a -- quite a stretch. the chinese have seen this coming for a number of years. this is picking a backup after the snowden revelations. the u.s. was headed in this direction. >> why now? to u.s. seems to be ready make charges against a number of countries. why start with china? i think it is a timing issue. 2010, the obama administration intended to go down this path and they were wrongfooted by the snowden story. now it has come back. >> that is the back story. the c

here to take a look is ian bremmer. pleasure to have you back on the show. >> good to see you. >> how does this alliance impact america's ability isolate will russia? >> the europeans aren't even with us on this. >> europe still is the biggest buyer of russian oil. >> russian gas by a large margin, even with the new chinese deal. but this is a $400 billion 20-year deal it is landmark. it is historic. the chinese are the largest purchaser -- largest purchasers of their weapons around the world comes from russia. it's 64% of all purchases high technology. there's a lot of interest in agriculture and land cooperation. if you think of the organizations the u.s. is pursuing. the g-7 and trans atlantic deal with europeans, these organizations nato, russia is not a part of them and china is not a part of them. when we talk about isolating russia, what we're really doing is pushing russians in a direction that's very problematic for us. it is a failed policy. >> another way in which this alliance flies in the face something ame
