we are joined now by ian bremmer, president and founder of the eurasia group. the scene for us. ,s this really about hong kong is that what this is really about, or something much more broader, geopolitical? : let's be clear, if the chinese took the steps at any any administration, the u.s. would be acting severely. the fact that the hong kong decision comes at a time of great economic crisis, immense distrust between the countries, a level of decoupling which is speeding up of the integration that our economies have, and that president trump is running for reelection with over 100,000 dead from coronavirus, expecting a 8% contraction of the economy and over 40 million on a lloyd in the last two months, and china being the most plausible proximate after he can blame for this aside from himself, you can understand why i am not optimistic about the near-term trajectory of u.s. china relations. to some extent, president trump is looking at the election in november. what is president xi looking at, is this a long game, or does he have his own domestic political iss

joining me now is ian bremmer.urious your take on what we heard from david culver there, what china state media is putting out and what reuters is now reporting. that really stops you for a minute. >> certainly it is really plausible we come out of this coronavirus crisis in a cold war between the united states and china. the trump administration really wants to be able to pin blame for what is going to be unacceptable mortality in the united states and handling of all of this on anyone but the trump administration. china is easiest to do. the chinese, xi jinping is facing a lot of domestic irritation, both with the fact it was mishandled at the beginning and also that the americans are getting aggressive towards china and following the worst recession that china is going to be experiencing in decades, they really don't want to fight with the americans. so i'm increasingly hearing people inside china saying xi jinping is not at all a layup for a third term in 2022. insecurity domestically for both leaders and a lot
