cnn's ian lee is live in ramallah with the breaking details. ian, i was worried for you, brother. i was seeing you there. i know how those situations can devolve quickly. what is the state on the ground? >> chris, this is really a pitch battle right now. on the side we're at, palestinians are throwing rocks. some of them have slingshots, putting rocks and tossing them at the israelis. i would say a few hundred yards in that direction, you have israeli troops there. we have heard tear gas being fired, rubber bullets being fired. we have seen a number of people who have been injured, ambulances. you can see over here there's a number of ambulances that have staged that are getting ready to ferry anyone who is injured to a hospitalized. i want to show you something else, chris. down here you can see a lot of skins of onions. they're all over the place. pieces of onions. that helps counteract tear gas. this one in particular is a protest site that happens from time to time. but we haven't seen this number of people here. when you speak to people, there's a lot of anger, palpable anger

let's bring in ian lee, also following the situation on the streets in ramallah. d ian, from what you're seeing and to arwa's point, is there a sense among people you've spoken to that things are somehow different now? >> reporter: yeah, that's the one question we've been asking a lot of people is what is different about this time versus previous times. of course, you had that major announcement by u.s. president donald trump declaring jerusalem the capital of israel. but really we have ventured into the unknown. you talk to palestinians and ask them where does this go from here. a lot of the them have told me that, frankly, they don't know. they think it could go a lot further. you bring up the word -- the phrase third infanata, something that hamas and gaza has called for. people say it could happen. it could not happen. that's the unknown. where we are, we're expecting protests to come here again today. this is where thursday we saw some of the most violent clashes between the israeli army and palestinian protesters. this area behind me, there was just thick wit

i want to go to ian lee now in jerusalem as mentioned. ian, what impact will this likely have on any efforts to find peace in the middle east? and what will this mean for israel's relationship with turkey from its perspective? >> rosemary, like gul said, that the relationship had been rocky. it was starting to thaw in june of 2016. but what we're seeing right now is a crisscrossing of red lines. for turkey they said that making jerusalem the capital of israel was one for them. for israel, they only see jerusalem as their capital. the one thing that's interesting to note is after the united states declared jerusalem as the capital of israel, we didn't see any other countries follow suit, at least not yet. we've heard rumors, but none of them have done it. we also have been watching closely what president mahmood abbas has been doing. he has been traveling around arab countries with close relations with the united states to try to garner support. yesterday he was in jordan. today he is going to be speaking with presidency cease sisi of egypt

let's bring in ian lee following this story for us live in jerusalem. ian, good to have you with us. to get a sense of what is happening there, tell us about the mood today on the streets. we have seen protests and more are expected. >> reporter: that's right, george. in about, oh, an hour's time we're expecting more protests to kick off in jerusalem and possibly the west bank. when watching these protest s o a daily basis, going out to them, on thursday we saw the largest protests with thousands of people going out all over the palestinian territories, this time, though, yesterday, we went to the same place, the numbers have dwindled. when we were watching ben wedeman's reporting, we saw a large number of people in the streets. and we haven't seen those numbers sustain themselves here in jerusalem in the west bank in gaza. the numbers have declined a bit. we have seen, you know, a larger protest in neighboring countries like jordan, lebanon, also turkey as well. and when you talk to people, they have this sense of defeatism, they believe that, you know,

joining us now ian lee, in jerusalem, for us. ian, what are you hearing? >> that's right, john.r of key u.s. allies speak to president trump, speaks to the u.s. administration, talking to them about the consequences that could happen if the united states does go forward and move the embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem and recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel. you know, president trump has worked hard to cultivate better lee relations in the middle east with the leaders here since he took office. most noticeably with jordan, saudi arabia, and with egypt and all three of those countries have warned the president about going forward with this decision. now israeli officials up until yesterday had been noticeably quiet, but we've heard from the defense minister and as well as the mayor of jerusalem, both have praised and encouraged president trump to make the move. but it really boils down to, you know, what this will mean. jerusalem is a very sensitive subject for both israelis and the palestinians. the palestinians see it as the eastern part, as the future site of their cap

ian lee is joining us from jerusalem. ian, how much concern is there about this potential announcement by the president? >> reporter: wolf, there is a lot of concern from leaders across the region because, frankly, we're going into uncharted waters when it comes to this. the united states making a big move potentially going -- moving the embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem and declaring jerusalem the capital of israel. we know that president trump likes to fancy himself as a deal-maker, but if he does go forward with this, this could break the deal. we've talked to a number of palestinians who said that if the u.s. goes forward that they don't see the u.s. as a credible partner for peace. basically telling the united states to take a seat. and move to the sidelines. so there is concern with the peace process in general. could it go forward, but then you have to look at the neighboring countries, too. they're very concerned for any sorts of violence that they could see in their capitals across their countries. that's why, wo

. >> we're joined by ian lee in jerusalem. ian, five days after mr. trump's decision hour, do israeli officials, first among them benjamin netanyahu there, feel about the level of pushback that they're seeing? >> well, cyril, i don't think any of them would look at what is going on and be surprised about the pushback because they've heard strong warns from arab leaders, from regional leaders about the united states making this unilateral move and decision by declaring jerusalem the capital of israel. but at the same time this is something they feel very comfortable weathering. they got what they wanted. this is something they've advocated enthusiastically for years, that the world recognize jerusalem as their capital. now it's just the united states. no other countries, at least so far have followed the united states' footsteps. but this is something that they're quite pleased with, despite the warnings. and we saw the prime minister. he's meeting with eu foreign ministers. and they're going to be discussing this. now, the prime minister has said that

it is a big story we're following and cnn's ian lee is live following that story in jerusalem. u on the show this hour, ian. how would this work? physically, how would it work to move the embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem? >> george, there is a couple of theories of how they would possibly do this. one is pretty simple, you just take the sign off the building in tel aviv, and you put it on one of the two consulates here in jerusalem, the united states has one consulate, that's in west jerusalem and another consulate that's in east jerusalem. the belief is that this embassy would be in west jerusalem. the other way they could do this is there is a plot of land that the united states has been leasing from the israeli government at about a dollar a year. this is a plot of land they say could be the future home of a u.s. embassy. so really depends on how quickly they want to make that transition if they in fact decide that they do want to move the embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem, george. >> what is the overall reaction you're hearing about this? certainly the divisions here, and

cnn's ian lee is watching from jerusalem and joining me live. what are they saying over there? >> people are bracing for this announcement. we need to note that the had the hasn't said it yet, but people are act being like he is or is about to. they say we will help put the pressure on president trump. we are also hearing from the king who warned of the dangers of any decision without a comprehensive peace deal. he went on to say that he stressed that the adoption of this decision will have serious ramifications and implications on the security and stability of the mideast. this is something we heard not just from the jordanians, but the saudis and the egyptians and other leaders are who are worried of what this could mean for stability and security. we know that they warned him about making such a unilateral move. israeli officials advocated for this for a long 250i78. they welcomed a potential decision. you have dhn and what is your sense that i intended. >> they are close, but separate. they have the mandate. that's why this is on the table now. the deadline was yesterday. t

let's get over to jerusalem right now, ian lee is there. ian, what are you learning? >> >> well, this phone call, kate, happened just a little while ago. and we're learning this from the president's spokesman about this phone call that took place between president trump and palestinian president mahmoud abbas. he did say that he was going to move the u.s. embassy. one thing we noted in this statement, a time. he doesn't say when he will do it or -- so that's something that we'll be watching closely as well. the spokesman also added that abbas warned the president of any consequences that could happen with such a move and this is something, kate, we've been hearing not just from the palestinian president but other regional leaders. we also had the french president emmanuel macron warn the president about taking such unilateral measure and president abbas has said he is going to work hard with other international leaders to kind of put the pressure on the president to stop him from making such a decision with this decision being made. not only would the president move t

ian lee live. it is is just about 1:00 p.m. ian? >> reporter: dave, behind me there's chanting.been gathering in the square, the main square here in ramallah. we have had protests like this all over the west bank, as well as jerusalem and gaza, people angry about president trump's decision. i'm going to show you over here. just to show you the mood. you have these stores that are closed. that's because there's been a call for a general strike in the west bank and in east jerusalem, closing down the stores, closing down the schools. people going out in the streets to voice their anger. we've heard a lot of frustration just talking to people here. they are frustrated for a couple of reasons. first with the united states. they said the united states portrayed itself as a a partner in peace. they say that the united states showed their true colors. that's what people are telling me, saying they were always with the israelis. the other thing we are hearing is frustration with political leadership. they say they don't feel they have been represented well. they said that's why you are

ian lee, cnn jerusalem. >> i want to bring in cnn global affairs analyst.ng for the u.s. state department and has been an adviser. president trump campaigned on this saying he would move the u.s. embassy. why do you think the decision has not been made yet? >> you know, two of his last three predecessors also campaigned on the issue they would move the embassy and didn't. i suspect having provided advice to half a dozen secretaries of state my advice on jerusalem was the same, don't play around with it. it's a tinder box waiting for a match. but i believe that on wednesday the president will exercise the national security waiver that will at least delay or defer actually opening an embassy in jerusalem but he is probably going to make a statement if the media speculation is right and some inside source that is he's going to declare jerusalem or west jerusalem. i think it's ill-advised and not time and not sure it serves any american interests that i can identify. >> what is the benefit for american interests to do that? >> well, the only possible benefit an

ian lee is live with more. what's it like there? >> reporter: calm right now, chris. but u.s.c missions here and around the middle east are bracing for any ramifications of that announcement. we know israel has also beefed up security arched the area. they are warning u.s. citizens to avoid any large crowds and the city. they have urged the united states not to take this step. the uk, france, turkey, as well as jordan, saudi arabia, and egypt. jordan and the palestinians have called for an emergency session of the arab league to discuss this move. even pope francis has come out and urged the united states to stick with the status quo. so why is jerusalem so contentious? well, in 1967, israel occupied the eastern part of the city. and according to the international community, the status of jerusalem would be determined through negotiations and peace process between the israelis and the palestinians. the palestinians see this as a unilateral move by the united states and israel to declare jerusalem the capital of israel without any peace negotiations. and that's why there has be

ian lee is monitoring things for us in jerusalem and nic's report there did ask a lot of questions aboutg these protests will go and what's really on the minds of people that are not just angry at donald trump, they're angry at some of their own leaders. >> reporter: that's right. when we saw in the beginning of that piece, we saw the intensity of the clashes between protesters and the army and the police on thursday, friday. today there's calls for more protests although we haven't seen them materialize in the street and that raises the question of does this story -- or does this protest movement for the palestinians, does it have legs? will it continue? can they keep this momentum up? or will they eventually go home and just accept this decision by the united states. we also heard, though, the frustration from the palestinian leadership about there's really no way forward. we still haven't heard what way forward the palestinian authority is going to take and so that vacuum we have seen protesters on the street but right now it is quiet in jerusalem. >> we know that to the vice presiden

our elise labott is tracking all of this, as well as our ian lee, who is live for us in the west bankso, ian, let me go to you first. i mean, we know that embassies have been preparing, american embassies across the region, for violent protests. we know what many of the palestinians have called for in response. what are you seeing on the ground? >> reporter: well, really, poppy, right now, it's one of anticipation. you know, we're here in ramallah, and people on the street, they're just waiting to hear this announcement. they want to hear the words themselves from president trump about what he intends to do with the u.s. embassy and jerusalem. is he going to declare it the capital of israel? and from there, we will likely see protests. there has been a call for three days of rage, where protesters are expecting to go out into the street. and we saw this over the summer, similar protests over jerusalem. and that brought out thousands of people into the streets of jerusalem. and we're hearing from different factions, hamas, the militant organization, also, calling for people to go out a
