cbs' ian lee has more tonight on the threat of a wider conflict. >> reporter: israeli guns erupt in the country's north. there angry fire targeting positions in neighboring lebanon, revenge for missiles and mortars launched into israel. israeli war planes also striked the militants as the country reinforces the border. but this is not war, not yet. both sides are squaring up, testing the others' resolve. today, prime minister benjamin netanyahu visited the troops, saying, if hezbollah decides to enter the war, they will be making the biggest mistake of their lives and we will hit them with an unimagnable force. just behind me is the border with lebanon in those hills, iranian-backed hezbollah is operating. over the past two weeks we've witnessed low-intensity fighting.pbut there's fear thatd become another front in this war. iran's foreign minister warned opening that front is inevitable, if israel expands its war against gaza. if that happens, the fight against hamas would likely become a side show to the intense fighting in the north. because hezbollah has the missiles, lots of them,

this morning we're joined live by cbs correspondent ian lee to tell us more about the situation there on the ground. good morning, ian. >> reporter: good morning, max. >> and this morning israel officials announced they did, in fact, send troops into gaza on friday night. what is the situation like there on the ground this morning? >> reporter: max, the fog of war is particularly foggy today as israel conducted that ground incursion into gaza. this is the largest operation so far of the war overnight, by land, air, sea. israeli forces pounded northern gaza. soldiers and engineers supported by tanks moved past the border, destroying 150 underground targets, which includes tunnels and command and control. israeli officials won't say if this is the long anticipated ground invasion, but we did just hear from the defense minister who said we have passed the stage in the war, the ground in gaza shook, the forces are clear. the operation will continue until a new order. max? >> and ian, we noticed this operation is going to continue in the days to come at least. there is still a humanitarian

we get more from cbs's ian lee. >> reporter: the conflict between israel and gaza has its roots in 1967 when israel captured the narrow coastal strip from egypt during the six-day war. resistance to israel's occupation led to the first palestinian uprising known as anent fadda and the birth of hamas. it ended as the 1993 oslo peace accords brought forth peace for a future palestinian state. but frustrations led to a second even more bloody war. it was the withdrawal from gaza, leaving it to be ruled by the palestinians. the following year, palestinians angry with their government's corruption handed hamas an electoral victory. but rival israel and the united states rejected their rule. that same year hamas kidnapped israeli soldier who would eventually be exchanged for more than 1,000 palestinian prisoners. in 2007, hamas seized control of gaza during a civil war with fatah. the following years would see sporadic violence and major wars. but invading gaza by ground is something israel has only done twice. israeli forces entered cities in 2009 to stop rocket attacks and weapons smuggling
