tonight, our chief foreign correspondent ian pannell in antakhia where he witnessed a remarkable find race against time to treat the victims earthquake. helicopters ferrying the wounded from the disaster zone to the region's biggest hospital. on a normal year, 42 choppers land near. now it's 40 every day. these helicopter rescue missions are now going on around the clock. more than 700 patients rescued just in this hospital alone. the medics have barely slept this week. dr. halil, the health chief, says this is the most serious situation he's ever encountered. and the hospital wards are teeming with miraculous tales. hello, little man. when the quake struck, the family's sixth-floor apartment crashed to the ground. adam spent 14 hours digging with his hands to free his wife and young son from the rubble. 6-year-old ramhala has injuries all over his small body. he tells me, "it's very bad, my leg's broken. i want my school, i want my teacher, i want my cats." it's heartbreaking for his parents to hear. his mom hiyreah says, "what do i feel? there isn't anything anymore. it's all gone."

let's get more from ian pannell in kyiv. , you're there amid new concerns that china may insert itself more directly in this war. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, george, that's right. china's top foreign policy official has been meeting with russian president vladimir putin this morning amid those u.s. warnings that beijing is considering sending lethal aid to russia. in the thinly veiled reference to the u.s. wang yi saying russia and china will not succumb to pressure from other countries. remember, president putin has invited president xi jinping to russia although the chinese haven't confirmed such a meeting will take place. the chinese is expected to promote the peace initiative. what russia is looking for is more weapons and ammunition as stocks are depleted because of the war. meanwhile, there's a massive pro-war rally taking place in moscow. president putin expected to attend and address that later. meanwhile, the fighting in the east of ukraine intense for weeks as this offensive goes on, but not making as much prog
