ian williams is covering the story from bangkok. >> the storm has now been downgraded, but it's still packing a mighty punch, west of the main island of okinawa. the latest reports, we're hearing, suggests the island is riding out the storm reasonably well. they have been well prepared, with the highest alert that the japanese government can issue. it urged up to 600,000 people to leave their homes and take shelter. now they fear this intense rain, this very heavy rain, this heavy wind, and also, of course, the possibility of storm surges. don't forget, as well, that this island hosts the biggest u.s. base in that region. 30,000 u.s. service personnel live there, and that base is on lockdown with the personnel urged to stay at home and some of the aircraft have been flown out. now, the storm is expected to lose some of its strength as it moves north towards the main islands of japan, which it's expected to hit a little bit later this week. ian williams, nbc news, bangkok. >>> thrill ride screams turn into cries for help onboard a popular roller coaster. what the ride slammed into befo

ian williams is in bang congress, thailand, with the latest on this morning. hey, ian. >> reporter: good morning to you. well, the latest reports we're getting from the main island of okinawa is they do appear to be riding out this monster storm reasonably successfully. now, the island is, though, being pummeled by heavy, heavy rain and winds gusting up to 150 miles per hour. now, the storm is now at its most intense. it is some 70 to 100. the center of the storm off the coast of okinawa. the japanese government issued its highest level of alert, urging 600,000 people to evacuate their homes and take shelter because of this intense weather, because of the danger of storm surges. now, to get a real idea of the scale of this storm, look at this photograph taken from space from astronaut reed wiseman. 250 miles across, that monster is. it is heading north, towards the main islands of japan where it is expected to reach a little bit later this week. don't forget also that okinawa is home to 30,000 u.s. service personnel. the bigger space in the pacific. and they ha
