but of course the north koreans are working very hard to get functional icbm's. danger is not that great yet because there are at least two major hurdles. one is, if you mount a nuclear warhead on a missile, it must be that small to be transported. this is a very difficult technology. second, if you need to, let's say, separate the warhead from the missile, this is another complicated technology. thirdly, you have to shield the warhead. brent: exactly. nuclear weapons capability is still up in the air. but they do have a rocket, if it is an icbm, that can pose a credible threat to the u.s. does that change the calculus then for everyone? china, japan, south korea? gunter: everyone was preparing for such a situation. the threat, that's the question. the only threat they tried to produce against the united states. south korea, forget about that. china, they would never, ever attack china. brent: this is the first time we've talked about them having a rocket that could reach u.s. territory. if the u.s. president is faced with that reality he's going to have to act.

they expected a missile test but they did not expect one that included an icbm. that was not foreseen. and it was on a mobile launcher. if you were considering a preemptive strike. there's a lot of talk we should take military action to take down a missile if we thought that a missile are on a launch pad and had a nuclear weapon, we should take preemptive action. in this case, a satellite is unlikely to spot this missile which was liquid fueled but mobile, and very difficult to spot in the short amount of time that it was ready to launch. so there were only a couple of hours. they didn't see it quickly enough and were taken by surprise. the other piece we're reporting is it's been known former president obama did on november 10th at his first and only meeting with the oval office with donald trump, the president-elect, warn him that he should not be so worried about obamacare but that the biggest threat that he would face would come from north korea. what we've learned in the last 24 hours from multiple sources is that he also warned him of the impending developm

it was a missile that they claim was an icbm.ontinental ballistic missile that could hit anywhere in the world. experts say that is not the case, but they're trying to figure out whether or not it would be able to hit alaska. we know from the figures, the altitude was just over 1,700 miles. the distance, just over 570 miles. flew for 39 minutes. that's what north korea said. now we had an initial assessment from u.s. pacific command just before they claimed it was an icbm. they said it probably wasn't. they thought it was a level lower. but we haven't had the exact assessment from the south korean military. we're trying to find out what they think the range was and certainly whether or not that will be updated by u.s. pacific command, as well. the tweet you mentioned by the u.s. president, that was just after the missile but before we realized just how significant this missile test could have been. it will be interesting to see if there's an updated response from the white house. we had a comment from the south korean president m
