the polls have just closed in idaho. bernie sanders is favored tonight on the democratic side in both states that are holding caucuses. he's favored in the idaho caucuses and in the utah caucuses tonight. this idaho race has a bit of an interesting history because idaho in 2008 became kind of the big exemplar that barack obama used in his campaign against hillary clinton used in 2008. it racked up big wins in these low population states that held caucuses. it happened underneath the radar but that's a big part of how he won in 2008. this 2008 in little old idaho where something like one in ten registered voters in a democrat. it's a real sign that something was going on with the obama caucus strategy when then candidate barack obama showed up at boise state on the saturday before the idaho caucuses in 2008. he turned out 14,000 people at a rally. any time a democrat turns out 14,000 people in idaho, you know something is going on opinion sure enough in the caucuses in idaho in 2008, barack obama went onto beat hillary cl

is the democratic only result for idaho. we just to the representative a moment ago, in the most populous county in idaho, which is ada county. trying to get a little more clarity on what is happening with the democratic caucus tonight, what is happening in ada county tonight and what it might mean when the rest of the country can go to bed. mr. ferguson, thank you for joining us, appreciate you being here. >> thanks for the wonderful introduction. >> tell us what is going on with the idaho democratic caucus. as far as i know your previous record turnout statewide was in that epic race in 2008, barack obama won hugely, the statewide turnout was 21,000, it sounds like you will below that out of the water. >> yeah, i believe so. we have reports of all of our caucuses around the state. and there are 40 different sites having higher than expected turnout. and of course in ada county there were people waiting in line. the line was reported to be a mile long. what is interesting is they're not angry, they're really happy. they say

this is a huge part of the vote of idaho.of the population and as we heard earlier officials confirmed this is the largest single caucus in u.s. history. the result here could have impacts on the race for bernie sanders specifically because he needs some momentum and winning delegates here in idaho could reverse course. hillary clinton winning in arizona earlier tonight. bernie was here yesterday driving support, trying to drive enthusiasm to the polls. hillary had not visited the state. she sent a surrogate here. bernie has spent more money in advertising than hillary here. so we're about to hear the results at any moment. we are expecting a close race here from what i can see in the room there was a lot of support for bernie, but it's unclear whether or not the ballots that came in and were left may have weighed in hillary's favor so we'll have to wait and see how the vote turns out. >> we're the only network that will have live coverage of that. the results they're going to show us for the entire state of idaho or simply t

idaho's primary and hawaii's caucus. these are the only two contests tonight on the democratic side. >> this is it. >> michigan and mississippi. mississippi we got basically an instant call. we know that will be a very large margin for hillary clinton right now with 95% of the vote in in mississippi. she's winning 83%-16%, so that will be just an absolutely huge margin. what's important there, though, is that bernie sanders is above 15% in mississippi, so that means he won't get blanked in delegates, but he will not get very many. hillary clinton will get the vast majority in this very tight race in michigan, which took us 2 1/2 hours after poll closing time, 3 1/2 hours after we got our first data out of michigan, before we were finally able to make a call. this will go down as effectively, obviously, a sanders win, but effectively, a split in terms of the delegates here. so, they're going to split them in michigan. she's going to win the vast majority in mississippi. she's going to have the better night overall, but in

idaho, projected winner, 11:32 p.m. in idaho right now.ant to bring in by phone bill denser, who is a political reporter for the idaho statesman in what has been a little bit more political action than idaho usually sees in the primaries. walk us through why this night has been different than other nights. >> well, yeah, thanks. it certainly has. i don't think there was any anticipation there would be this kind of turn-out for this race. 27,000 people preregistered throughout the state to participate. and that was more than the last record year of 2008, when 21,000 participated. and here in boise, which is the biggest center in the state, there are about 9,000, almost 10,000 votes cast tonight. the line out the door was three, four hours to get in. the caucus in this area started two and a half hours late, about 9:50 local time and we just got the final results from the second ballot here, about 15 minutes ago. >> you look at idaho, the kind of state it is. people think of it as pacific northwest or northwest, but it is very rural. it is s

a lot left to do here in idaho.as been light unlike thepi[ other states that you have mentioned and other states this primary season. this is a closed primary, so only registered republicans can vote. people can register today, but that doesn't seem to be happening a lot. polls taken inz january and february show donald trump in the lead, followed by senators ted cruz and marco rubio. but that was before the debate last week on fox and the attacks on trump for mitt romney and other prominent republicans. we have spoken with some trump supporters today who are fed up with the status quo. but more people told us they voted for cruz, saying that he has the best shot at derailing trump. while mr. trump did not campaign in idaho and has no organization on the ground here, senator cruz held two events in the state saturday, in fact, one was with over 3,000 people to the north. this is a conservative state which sets up well for cruz. senator marco rubio held his rallies in idaho on sunday. he had good crowds in idaho fall

simply a tuge tiff warrant for his return to idaho. typically defendants will waive their rights to an extradition hearing but that's not what happened today. in an unusual move, odom told the judge he wants to be heard before the chief judge here in d.c. superior court. the only issue at that hearing will be whether or not this is a valid warrant out of idaho and whether or not, in fact, he is kyle odom. now, that hearing has been scheduled for april 6th. i can tell you there were fbi agents as well as federal prosecutors expecting him to be released to their custody so he could be extradited back to idaho but that's not what happened today. there was a bench conference. it is expected that while odom is in custody here for the remainder of this month, he will undergo a mental evaluation. that's the very latest from d.c. superior court. jim, back to you. >> >>> you may have seen this video. now we're hearing new allegations about with this officer was caught kicking and slapping a teen. >>> now metro is proposing to give back to rider

long, long lines in idaho.but a whole lot of enthusiasm, enthusiasm for bernie sanders. >> reporter: yeah, john, the line wrapped around several blocks, at least a mile long. initially organizers told us to expect somewhere between 10,000 and 12,000 voters. they got roughly over 9,000. ebt 9,100, and as you said, bernie sanders really outdoing hillary clinton here in idaho. the results from this race are very similar to what we saw in 2008 where barack obama took about 80% of the vote here. hillary clinton didn't really have a presence here in idaho, she didn't spend any money on advertising, bernie sanders had several visits to the state. he was here just yesterday, speaking to boise state students about 7,000 of them, challenging them to come out and represent him and vote for him here in the caucuses. he also spent about $100,000 on advertising. so clearly that effort worked out for him. the big question is whether or not this is going to be enough moving forward, as you mentioned, a win for hillary clinton

melis melissa davelin is coest ho o idaho reports. there's a large mormon contingent in the primary, it's why mitt romney did so well in '08 and '12. that vote transferable to a marco rubio? i know he was hoping that would be the case in nevada. it didn't work out for him. will it work out for him in idaho? >> i think there are two factors to understand here. first of all, there is a huge mormon population in idaho, but that's in the southern part of the state, which i think was going to lean a little bit more rubio in the first place, anyway. in north idaho, where they have very different issues, very different culture, less of an lds population, like you said, i think they were going to lean more cruz or trump in the first place, so although the romney robo calls went out on behalf of the marco rubio campaign, they never explicitly said "vote for rubio," they just attacked trump. and i don't know at this point in the game, since they just came out monday, if it's really going to be enough to sway voters one way or another. >> who ha

the pattern holds in wyoming and idaho.d and second in terms of proportional mormon population. the fourth is in nevada. donald trump won nevada. maybe the donald trump can't win mormon states is bunk. we've had two states that disprove it and one that proves it. we may find out in utah. polling is generally sort of impossible in caucus states. on the republican side the polling shows that ted cruz is favored in that utah caucus. on the democrat side, in the democratic caucus in utah, we have one poll this month and it shows bernie sanders up by eight points. senator sanders does pretty well in caucus states. there's a democratic caucus tomorrow in idaho where there's been precisely zero recent public polling but where senator sanders is expected to win. both the sanders campaign and the clinton campaign say they expect senator sanders to win both democratic caucuses tomorrow in idaho and utah. we won't know until we know but those are the expectations. the big prize on both sides tomorrow is arizona. arizona has long been
