they feel a need to respond as the idf described it? >> well, you precisely hit the point, which is it is whatever they feel. it's not really a question of what is legitimate or under international law and nobody has held israel to task over the fact that they have invaded a foreign area, that they keep bombing a foreign area, and at the same time they're occupying that foreign area. unless and until we get some international leadership on this issue to say and put some clear red lines to israel, my fear is that this is going to continue once again. >> a government spokesperson has told cnn's matthew chance that if the cease-fire holds, they will then go ahead with talks in cairo. do you expect the various factions within gaza also to do the same? >> the factions have already met in cairo and they are ready to have a united positions when it comes to what steps should be taken in the future. the factions have come out uniformly and said we need to start addressing the root causes, we need to lift the blockade that has been over the gaza

we were told by the idf that would happen within 24 hours.tary operation continues business as normal, doesn't it? >> i think we have seen a significant change. it happened with the failure of the latest cease-fire and the attack that we now know killed three israeli soldiers. suicide attack by militants who, we understand came up from a tunnel, saw israeli soldiers and opened fire and then the suicide bomber blew himself up. from then on, it seems to have changed the israeli calculus from one of degrading hamas' militant capability to possibly destroying much of it. the israeli officials i was speaking to in the middle of the week were talking about hey, we know that they have 3,000 to 4,000 rockets left. we know they probably still have tunnels in place, but we can leave that as it is and go to a cease-fire and then rely on a deal with the egyptians to better monitor the area as a mechanism to keep hamas from threatening israel. that seems to have now changed. before they didn't want to keep on with the onslaught that we have seen in the pa

this is from the idf, every rocket fired by hamas is meant to kill israeli civilians. every rocket is a war crime. the palestinian authorities in the west bank are saying that israel committed war crimes during this military operation and should be brought before the international criminal court. there's also jeffrey knights, one of the world's most renown war crimes prosecutors involved in many trials there, he told cnn it is possible that israel could face war crimes charges. what's your response to that? >> well, first of all, we carry out our actions with explicit care in order to limit the civilian impact. we are faced with a terrorist organization that is indiscriminate lly launching rockets into our civilians. we don't want to go into gaza. we just don't have a choice. you can imagine in the u.s., three quarters of the united states was covered with rockets on a daily basis, how would you feel? what would you do? what would you expect your military to do? indeed, this is a huge challenge for the military. when we're going in striking against hamas and terrorists

hamas saying they did not agree to it and during the course of that cease-fire, according to the idf, at least three rockets were fired from gaza toward israel. but it is the two attacks in here in jerusalem that have been getting a lot of focus by israeli authorities. as you mentioned the attack on a with us by -- on a bus by palestinian man in east jerusalem, slamming several times trying to flip over the bus. the driver was injured. a pedestrian was killed, and as you said, israeli police shot and killed the driver of that backhoe, and then about an hour later, the incident, a gunman on a motorcycle apparently shooting what appears to be an israeli soldier. local media reports showed picture of an israeli soldier with what appeared to be a stomach wound. that soldier receiving medical attention and a search was under way for the motorcycle gunman. that's adding to the tension here in this city and now the cease-fire is over, we'll be seeing what happens here on the ground and in other parts of israel and gaza as well. but as you said, palestinian officials were saying this cease-fi
