i was glad i found out i could use acronyms. [laughter] the names of other disabilities sounded italian and were easier to pronounce and remember. [inaudible] [laughter] [inaudible] one of my friends was offended because the disability with cerebral palsy. i told it how easy it was for me to understand her because her speech was wonderfully slurred so i grasped a lot of what she said why am i couldn't understand the other kids who spoke too fast. i was glad that in english my disability was called the same as it was in italian, polio. i don't know what i would have done if it had one of those hard to pronounce names. i figured polio was the best disability for me. [laughter] i'm trying to show how natural it is to start seeing disability not in such a negative way. in the hospital the doctors, should i read this -- may be. in the hospitals that doctors would come around and do their rounds and they usually didn't even talk to us, they talk to each other. you are laughing. [laughter] my roommate can they could be in a room with a

and i was confident when i was leading. and to make sure people were working nonstop and this is their life in many reported as a hardship post. and you could respond and 24/7, 365 job for our rockies. and i was incontinent of that and in terms of being a woman, in some ways there were similarities because of my background they see my name they know a muslim and they expected me to have a certain standard of behavior they did not expect her mother americans who are not at the background there was an element and i did not have to face all that stuff. and that my family about that. in just a little bit more on the identity issue i intentionally and this collection included women like haner who are dual nationalities and identities because i feel strongly that is part of the story of our world where you have them living outside the arab world and many were forced out of the world and live in exile and others have families who fled conflicts who are younger and so on. and i wonder to what extent your arab identity you feel a st

say, i applied and i was rejected and it was the first had in lifen i had and i remember crashing. i remember going to bed for the better part of a week and crying. i was so depressed and dejected. course, one has to eventually get out of bed because i needed a paycheck. i started applying elsewhere. job, only one offer did i receive, as a civilian with the department of army. where is the army contention -- contingent? [cheering] what did i know about the army or the military at large? no real exposure or even thought about it before and i was still feeling dejected from the whole state department experience. did my bestob and and after a few months, the most remarkable thing started to happen. i was engaged in really interesting work so i felt a sense of purpose. in my own little way, i was working on major issues. i had a great team i fell in with where there was great camaraderie. boss.had a first rate after that, one thing led to the next and led to the next which became what i think has been a fantastic and hugely fulfilling career for me all focused on the military. yearsfor

fernando: i just go with -- olivia: i just go with what i read this? just like a gift, by what you would get for yourself. the best stories have been from talking to people. i am someone who does not really enjoy talking to people on airplanes but they may further good stories. just getting out there and see my other people are interested in. it is actually just following trends. maybe something that isn't a trend yet but could be. i think you just get that from experience. fernando: i second all of that. especially with trends. it is really fun to be on the beginning side of trends, big, exciting trends. us have developed a not of spotting that before it gets really bible. on another note, i love talking to nonprofits throughout los angeles and the u.s.. those people are really intend with constituents and what they're doing with the rest of their lives. i think that is where you get really awesome and impactful stories. guess -- olivia: i guess the pull factor. it is the emotional experience of people and what they are going through. in a lot of the

i think of regina, i think of norman and i think of david. i want to talk about those three iowans in just a moment. a few months ago, i was in davenport and i met a woman named regina haddock. met a woman named regina haddock. she ran a non-profit called dress for success that helped domestic violence victims and women down on their luck get a shot out and a chance to move up in life. very successful. they took care of 1500 women a year. an incredible nonprofit, until the flood came and washed away her nonprofit. her nonprofit - because they weren't insured - lost everything, including their lease. when i was talking to regina and saw those tears of a dream deferred against a flood that has so affected the midwest, i came to believe we have to do something about the climate crisis. those tears of regina, having lost her dreams to take care of those women, were the same tears i have seen across the united states. they were just as salty as marshall moss', a woman i met in california, where next to paradise, you hear about paradise california,

i have a few points. i wrote them out, so i will read them. some of it is quoting from some articles in the chronicle, but particular things i thought were important. i wrote that the recent vote of the school board feels half-baked and tepid, only sponsored international ridicule and a way to quell public uproar this is from the chronicle editorial board. this compromises -- this compromises the best we can expect from this group, the school board. and his disregard for history, public art, and the ability of san francisco students to think critically. that i think it's a is a most important piece. the good news is that they save -- the face-saving decision to preserve the meals will be preserved for the day when the school board members are succeeded by elected officials with a greater position for -- appreciation of art and history. again, that is what is happening here is that it seems very common today that people don't like something, they feel bad, they don't have to take the course, they don't have to go to that lecture, but, you know,

i volunteer. i like to travel. i like yoga. i live a positive life. without life learning academy, i would not be where i'm at today. sorry. life learning academy helps give you the building blocks to build my life to something better than i thought i could be. because of the impact on me, i was invited to speak about life learning academy at a conference this past october in san francisco. mayor breed gave the keynote address at the conference and i was fortunate enough to meet her. she took time to talk to me. she offered me an unpaid internship upon graduation. like me, mayor breed was raised by her grandmother and the housing projects of san francisco and was able to fight her way out through the support of her community and educational opportunities. i admire her because she's charted a path for herself, rising above the obstacles to become the first african-american woman mayor of san francisco.
