in terms of options, if city college were to close we looked at what options city college students would have for alternative programs. if they are legible to transfer to the csu or other college, they could in fact transfer. while a lot of the courses are transferable credits, student may not need the minimum credit requirements and may have other reasons for which they can't transfer. about 14 hundred students transfer to csu or uc. if they were to transfer, we compare to years at city college to a comparable 2 years at csu and the difference is about $10,000 per student and the other area is lack of space at the csu. we looked at the csu in the bay area, san jose is impacted which means they have more qualified students than they have space. csu, they have space but not in our federal programs. college students enrolled in these programs would not be able to access these programs. >> can i say that if city colleges were closed that $10,000 might be a huge barrier and you are saying that there is less space at san jose state and many of the programs at san francisco state and californi

i want to focus first on just the impact if we were to lose city college. a lot of folks in my are trying to main tain their ged and an a a degree is millions of dollars in wages not earned. if we were to lose that, there would be a significant impact around the work opportunities of this population that does not have the high school diploma and ged and they would not be able to live here anymore. they would have to continue the migration of working class and people of color from this city. i also want to focus on the child care. we also train the bulk of our child care professionals here in the city. most working families know that it's very hard to pay for child care. someone quoted me a price just two weeks ago of $1700. i said that's more than i pay for housing. the more folks that we can educate. that makes more slots and we can lower the cost of child care and that helps families especially single head of household. the economic impact of just those two programs is something that should be quantified and keeping working class families in the city. i de

if all these students -- if city college closes, there are students [speaker not understood]. there are second chance students, ex offenders, [speaker not understood] based on their income. if all of these students lose the opportunity to attend city college of san francisco, their surrounding community colleges in the bay area will also have a limit, a cap on the number of students it can serve. mostly unlikely it will be able to attend another community college in the area. so, what would happen to san francisco with an additional 1500 students, ex offenders, low-income students, [speaker not understood] who cannot go to college, lose fund to begin with. and secondly, san francisco will have additional costs in providing service for these students as well as possibly crime will go up. in some cases we hope not. i strongly support what you're doing. thank you very much for having this hearing, but it's really important to you as elected officials do a little extra, if you can, to try to save city college. thank you very much.
