on february 16th will have been executive director of the ihss public authority for 16 years. so i am here representing them also. i think everybody in this room is really aware that the bay area is the birthplace and home of the independent living movement, and we're really fortunate to have that here. i see mike boyd in the room and he always likes to remind people that ed roberts day is coming up next week on wednesday. and there are always a variety of ways to raise consciousness around disability, human and civil rights and elevating days that have been set aside by state legislature to honor folks that have brought forward disability rights as one way to do that. so i will remind folks of that and there may be ways that you can participate and show support. we are very fortunate in san francisco that i think we have city leaders who really understand a lot of disability issues and try to put them forward. we have seen examples of that with the department of aging and adult services coming forward. but we still need to always emphasize the kind of unique issues that peopl

let's face it ihss hours are cutback. adult day health care services are cutback. programs are in peril that affect people. we hear talk there isn't money, but i want to bring to your attention last fall san francisco voters passed a tax-change measure. and the mayoral spokesperson in a later article indicated there likely could be more money from this new local tax measure that replaced an outdated one. to the extent that the office of disability, department of aging and adult services and mod can monitor the income from this new tax, i'm going to suggest that some of that extra money could be devoted to restoring some level of the cutbacks already made locally. but statewide is the larger issue. that is where the major changes have come. so i also wanted to alert you to a program called "a california budget for all of us." it's convening groups include well-known groups like the western center on law and poverty, health access, the california partnership, and the california immigrant policy center. the mantra is "restore, rebuild and reinvest." so this advocacy w

one tenant i see all the time that i saw last week she has her ihss case worker sit right outside the bathroom while she takes her shower because she is afraid she will fall and won't be able to call out for the help she needs if she falls. i do understand there is a cost associated with this but i think it is a very small cost in comparison to the increased safety the tenants will have in their bathrooms and their homes. as we look at the population of people who live in sro's, people are aging in place. some people really do like their homes and try to make the modifications to stay there, but the reality also in this market, especially in the mission district where i do the outreach, there's not a lot of options for renters. there's not a lot of options for low income people and the way our rent ordinance is in san francisco, someone moved into a building 15 years ago and was able to walk up and down 4 flights of steps and was able to take a shower in the existing facilities, that may not still be the case today. keep in mind that people can't pick up and move and can't go and find
