wusa 9's ileana diaz is live at the scene. and ileana, we're hearing that the man had a bb gun? >> well, that's right. we now know it was a bb gun. but when police responded to this apartment here behind me, all they saw was a man with a gun drawn. and when they asked him to put that gun down, instead, he turned the gun on the officers. >> and we heard what we thought were fireworks. >> and i heard, drop the gun, drop the gun. >> reporter: it's barnham street, now covered in police tape, officers found a man outside a building with a gun drawn. we now know it was just a bb gun. but the man holding it up refused to drop it and then pointed it at officers. >> five or six shots. >> police open fire and the man was shot and killed. >> reporter: but those close to him say he did have a problem dealing with his wife's death. >> i mean, i knew he had issues. but it seemed like it got worse when its wife passed away. >> reporter: that was a few years ago. but recently, friends tell us, he's been sharing suicidal thoughts with them. and it appears this might have been part of that plan.

ileana, i want to turn to you.u had some reporting last month on newt gingrich's prominence in the trump campaign. obviously as kelly o'donnell was laying out, a lot of other possible contenders. do you think he's still on the short list or at least high up in the ranking? >> hi, kristen. news broke, i believe, last week that newt gingrich was not being vetted. now it's difficult to know how seriously to take something like that because it's unclear to me how serious of a vetting operation trump actually has in place. and whether he'll actually thoroughly vet his vice presidential nominee in the end. what's clear about his vice presidential choice is that it's going to have to be somebody who is plausible, but more importantly, it's going to have to be somebody who wants to do it. and somebody that -- some of the people that you showed on screen a little bit earlier, including, you know, kelly aiot rkyotte of hampshire, some have been clear they don't want this job. they aren't planning to attend the convention. th
