john mccormick is on the ground in illinois, two big primaries in illinois tomorrow, he is the editor and kevin mcdermott is in missouri, he is a reporter with the st. louis post dispatch. before we get to them i am going to have to represent the state of north carolina for this segment, that's the other big state up for grabs tomorrow, unfortunately we were not able to hit the tar heel state in our recent battle ground state tour, but the good people at campbell university, home of the fighting camel camel's, they were kind enough to send along with very cool campbell university sweater which i am going to wear in this segment in honor of tomorrow's north carolina primary. so john mccormick with the "chicago tribune," let's start with you in illinois. we've been setting this one up during the show. let's start on the republican side, i think there was an assumption that illinois would be trump country, suddenly signs that ted cruz has a chance there. >> signs that ted cruz has a chance, but it's not natural cruz territory. most of the population is upstate and tends to be democratic.

illinois, the state where she was born.inton wins in illinois almost 4 1/2 hours after the polls close. 96% of the vote in, hillary clinton has 50.6%, 48.6%. that's more than enough to make sure is the projected winner. we have projected hillary clinton wins the democratic primary in illinois. that's her fourth big win of the night. she's won north carolina, ohio, florida and now illinois. only missouri outstanding. >> she's four for four of the wins we've called and what's interesting about this is this is no a state that the clinton campaign was going to win. they thought bernie sanders was going to win illinois. he had run a bunch of tv ads. they thought that that was working, it put clinton in a situation she couldn't distance herself and she couldn't express support and she was just kind of put in a corner and here it is a victory for clinton. >> the fact is, yes, the democrats will be proportional, but the fact is she has done incredibly well in several states tonight that her campaign was not sure she would. i think

in illinois. they're cheering presumably over there. i want to go to jim acosta over at trump headquarters in palm beach at mar-a-lago. he wanted to win illinois and we projected he is now the winner. >> reporter: absolutely, wolf. they're watching cnn here at the trump headquarters at mar-a-lago in west palm beach. they're very excited in here obviously. i think we're going to be hearing from donald trump shortly. i think from talking to some folks here that donald trump wanted to do was wait for some more of these election results to come in. didn't want to just come in after florida and then kasich winning ohio. now that illinois has come in, potentially the other states coming in, quite possibly for donald trump that we may be hearing from him shortly. interesting to see that illinois is going donald trump's way after all of that trouble that we saw unfold in chicago the other night. obviously that was not a big enough issue for republicans in that state, wolf. >> all right. we're going to sta

46,000 in illinois right now. illinois still outstanding. the only outstanding vote on the republican side, missouri. here are the states won so far. let's update you. donald trump has won tonight in florida, illinois and north carolina. remember, florida is winner take all, 99 delegates there. john kasich, the governor of ohio, he's won his home state of ohio, 66, winner take all delegates there in ohio. he needed ohio. he got ohio. hillary clinton so far very good day for hillary clinton. she's won three states, florida, north carolina and ohio. important wins for hillary clinton on this day. let's go over to john king over at the magic wall. we have three outstanding contests right now. 99% of the vote is in in missouri and donald trump has a very, very slight lead. look at how close it is. >> 99% of the vote. we're still waiting on a good chunk of precincts. a little shy of 3,000 votes there. the one reason you would say trending in a very close election, you think donald trump is going to keep that lead, he's leading in st. louis county

there are five events across illinois. ted cruz those might have been turned off by the canceled rally over the weekend. cruz told the crowds trump is not a true conservative he claims to be once donated to the great governor rob blagojevich and democrat can mayor of chicago rahm emanuel and always speaking to his message he is the only candidate that can beat donald trump. >> the energetic amazing feel what a contrast with the democrats. ore the course of a year the field has narrowed. as we stand here today, there is one campaign. only one campaign that is in a position to beat donald trump and win the republican nomination. >>> there are 69 republican delegates up for grabs here and 156 democratic delegates. at one point hillary clinton had a clear lead in illinois. bernie sanders campaign has been itching closer and closer. now indicating bernie sanders in the lead in illinois. >> the congressman will be on later in the show. >>> no charges against donald trump after one of the supporters sucker punched a protester. th

here's what we're waiting for, missouri and illinois. and all of this brings questions as to the reaction in the sanders campaign, for that casey hunt is traveling with the sanders campaign. and tonight, casey, tell our good viewers why that means you are in arizona of all places? >> arizona of all places, brian. well it's a tough night for the sanders campaign. they acknowledge that. and his advisers are tells us that they know it's a, quote, tough road, although they feel like it could get better by tend of the month. there's these notes of resignation, where they were defiant before, where they feel they had been written before. we're in arizona, one of the future voting states, and they wanted to send a message that they're going to continue on, they're also scheduled to go to idaho later this week. but at this point, a much tougher night than they had expected. we'll see what happens in illinois. >> let's go to the suburbs of cleveland. this is the first this election season, we haven't seen a john kasich victory speech yet. but ton

of course, illinois and you end up having illinois is an open primary as well as missouri. ohio is a little bit different than in michigan where people can show up and you can request a democratic or republican ballot. you end up becoming a democratic or republican registered voter. if you want to keep your unaffiliated independent status, you can't vote in the republican or democratic primary. so it's a little bf different than what we're seeing in illinois and missouri, and last week in michigan, but certainly it's not closed the same way that florida is. >> so the difference potentially would be, mark, in ohio, for example, those people asking for crossover ballot could be some of these reagan democrats as we have heard, who in the past supported the democratic party but are now part of this broad group that we describe as the angry white vote. in illinois, the theory is that these are some people who say hillary clinton is in a safe spot. it's a wide enough field for her that they want to stop trump. and are going and voting on the republican primary in an attempt to vo

let's take a look at illinois. the democratic side of the illinois race, we've been talking a lot about the republicans tonight. but this one, coming right up on 80% of the vote in. too close to call separated by the difference of the population of a moderately sized american town. and let's go to chicago. chris hayes has been at a bernie sanders' watch party in chicago this evening. chris, what's it like at the ground level? the candidate, of course, is in arizona. >> yeah, look, i think there was a lot of hope about illinois and missouri among the sanders' folks. there was particularly hope here in illinois, because there has been such a strong grassroots sort of cultivated, particularly around cook county, there's a state's attorney's race here, for the state's attorney who didn't prosecute the laquan mcdonald police officer. she was kicked out tonight. a lot of action on the left. yet still sanders lost cook county by about eight points to hillary clinton. i think that indicates he's probably going to fall shor

that's really close in illinois.illinois there is a report that trump fired or replaced his state chair. trump at 34, cruz at 25, kasich 21, rubio follows at 16. is this outcome in question? >> i think probably trump will win. but not not just that poll but others have had it reasonably close between trump and cruz. down state is pretty rural. if you look at where cruz has won, he's been taking that central corridor of the country. i think it's reason any close. trump would be expected to win, but i don't think it would be a giant upset if cruz carried illinois. bill: cruz just said a few minutes ago he will win illinois. i look at missouri and santorum got 55% of the vote. missouri was funky in 2012. meaning when they voted and how they voted, it was a little best than normal. can cruz win in missouri? i think it comes down to that fundamental question. >> yes, he can. the electorate there is somewhat i am throort electric rats he has been able to carry in the central part of the country. i don't think it will be a

as you remember, she grew up in illinois and even a gold water girl in illinois in high school, from a very conservative republican father. gradually, she changed her leanings, and now, she is facing the possibility of a closely fought race with bernie sanders in illinois, because her base in chicago, the african-american community, is badly torn up over rahm emanuel, the laquan mcdonald shooting, against this unpopular mayor who has endorsed hillary clinton, worked for bill clinton. all that said, i caught up with hillary clinton today and asked her about the possibility she could lose her home state tonight. >> why is bernie sanders doing that well against you in illinois? >> look, we are having a great contest in all of these states, and i'm very pleased that so many people are engaged in our side of the political equation. contrary to what you're seeing with the republicans, we're actually running a campaign on issues, not insults. we have a lot of the same goals. i think i have a better approach to actually realizing affordable college, paying down student debt. all the other is

north carolina, missouri, illinois, we are neck in neck. we are essentially tied with donald trump. >> trump has won the most states and territories. and he has the highest number of delegates. cruz with 370. marco rubio is third with two states plus puerto rico. and kasich is winless with 63. rubio may be in for the toughest night of his career since trump is favored in his home state. >> i don't look at the number. a bunch of networks will have to ask pollsters for their money back. >> john kasich cast a ballot for himself in his home state of ohio and plans to head to pennsylvania tomorrow. unlike rubio, kasich says if he loses his home state, he'll fall out. after seeing a list of remarks about women, kasich said he'll take issue with it tomorrow. >> very concerned. i just saw a commercial, i guess, it was last night, of these comments that were made about women. i have two daughters. they see this stuff. what do you think they think? >> the ant-trump super pac is running an attack ad with women repeating trump's insults. >> dog. >> fat

how does he do in illinois? who does kasich do in illinois? we will see. but, you know, the big question for trump is, can he get over that 50% mark? can he break that ceiling. and if that's impossible, then are we looking towards a convention in cleveland? >> rick tyler, what are you looking for to find? >> well, i think it's all in ohio. that's why i'm here. if governor kasich can win ohio to slow down donald trump, but it looks like rubio will lose florida. we'll see if the polling is really wrong there. if rubio loses florida, it does get to a two-person race, because even if kasich wins ohio, he would have to win 110% of the votes, and i don't see him winning any other state tonight, of the delegates left. so that leaves no path for him. if rubio loses florida, it doesn't do anywhere else, it looks like he's not going to, it really becomes a two-person race, and that does give cruz a shot, if he can consolidate the establishment's vote, including the conservative's vote, against what donald trump is -- >> so let me ask you something, rick. i don't und

illinois not a win or take all states.tling it out to the share of the delegates. mike live in the windy city today. mike, whack we expect there today? >> well, you know, gretchen, if there's going to be an upset in illinois, anticipate that will be on the democratic side and that's because black lives matter and other minority groups are out demonstrating not against donald trump but hill cr -- hillary clinton. there is an organization which has reportedly hired a plane that's going to have a sign over the city. demonstrators are showing up at the polling locations. he's right on hillary's heels. >> sanders is going to continue to win states and she's going to drag him alodge all the way to the convention. >> the most pop ewe lis county in the state. gretchen. >> has there been an impact on the republican side for the demonstrators shutting down the trump rally friday night? >> the gut reaction i want to give you is it galvanized people to show up and vote for trump. we're not seeing that with the numbers. possibly becaus

illinois is a big state on super tuesday. did it ever get off the ground or had the protesters infiltrated from the start and then what happened? >> reporter: i wasn't here in the early going of this, because i actually flew up from st. louis, missouri, with donald trump on his 757, landed and came here during the horrible chicago traffic. got here just about half an hour before the rally was supposed to start. it was supposed to start at 6:00 central time. 6:00 went by. 6:30 went by. the crowd seemed to be fairly peaceful, but you could tell there was some undercurrent going on. mr. trump told me we're expecting a huge crowd in chicago, maybe 25,000, 30,000 people in a building that only holds 10,000. i'm getting indications, he told me, that it could be rough. maybe he was reflexing just on the nature of chicago politics, looking back at the 1968 protest that happened here, or he had some intel that maybe from the secret service or his advance team that there were a lot of protesters in the crowd. but where we normally see

unemployment in illinois is higher than the national average. the state is also losing its manufacturing muscle. >> one day before illinois voters head to the polls, the first round of layoffs began at this nabisco plant in chicago. >> i have a daughter in college and we have to scramble to figure out what we're going to do. >> nabisco's parent is moving half of the plant's 1200 jobs to mexico rather than renovate this facility. the move is drawing fire from presidential candidates on the left and right. >> when a company decides to leave like nabisco is leaving and they've gotten tax benefits from chicago and illinois to stay there, i'm going to claw back those benefits. >> we have to stop it, folks, i know how to stop it. >> jobs and the economy are front and center for many illinois voters this election year. unemployment here is 6.1%, more than a percentage point higher than the national rate. it's also significantly higher than other surrounding states in the rust belt. the line group in suburban chicago makes precision parts for honey well

trump with a slightly bigger victory over cruz in illinois. it's interesting to note voting was spuntuspended in parts of t state for the tornado threat. and trump is an apparent win in missouri with cruz less than 2,000 votes separating the two. it was a clean sweep for hillary clinton. she dominated in florida. nearly doubling the amount of votes bernie sanders received. clinton had a surprise victory in ohio which is a setback for sanders who predicted victory in the state. clinton won handily in north carolina. 121 delegates up for grabs there. for much of the race, the race in illinois was too close to call, but clinton is now the apparent winner. and a similar story in missouri where clinton narrowly edged out sanders by roughly 1,500 votes. in her victory speech, clinton pivoted to the general election and upped her attacks against trump. >> we are moving closer to securing the democratic party nomination and winning this election in november. when we hear a candidate for president call for rounding up 12 million immigrants, banning all

let's take a look at illinois right now. the polls are closed in illinois. look at how close it is in illinois right now. 38%, our estimate, for donald trump based on the exit poll information. 34% for ted cruz. only 19% for john kasich. in illinois, on the democratic side, our estimate, 51% for bernie sanders, 49% for hillary clinton. very, very close. we got a race on our hands in illinois on the republican and the democratic side. once again, remember, these are exit polls. they are estimates. they're based on our early survey of voters as they left their polling locations. the final outcome may be dig different, we can expect the numbers to change throughout the night. let's take a look at the states worn so far. look at this. on the republican side. the dark red is donald trump, he's got a -- with the exception of texas, he's got virtually a clean sweep of the south. he's won a lot of states. right now donald trump we project just wins in florida. take a look at the map on the democratic side. the dark blue is hillary clinton with the win we projected i
