because lincoln spent 30 years in illinois, even his enemies liked the man. problem with the republican party, and illinois is a perfect example, the geography really set the tone of the type of views you would establish. you think about the distance between the northern tier where rockford in the chicago area, that area between the southern tip, 400 miles. you draw a line across, the northern part is as north as the massachusetts main border and the southern part is as south as the north carolina-virginia border. the politics is going to be more southern as you go further into what is then called egypt, that part of the state. and in the northern part will be more abolitionist. that is the northern tier where chicago is. the problem is, the republican party is a big, tense party. it is not the gop, it is the brand-new party. the problem with the brand-new party is that it's elements, it's makeup were people that were politically opposed to each other just a few years before. the republican party consisted of both democrats and old wigs and old freese oilers
