ohio, illinois, missouri were all in question. now, missouri is still too close to call this morning. missouri with 100% of the precincts in, hillary clinton is leading bernie sanders, but it's less than 1%. we're still waiting for supervisional and absentee ballots. the same is true on the republican side. donald trump is leading ted cruz by 1,700 votes. we're not officially calling it because it's going to take some time to get the numbers in, but he is leading there. both donald trump and hns understa understandably and deservedly celebrating their victories. >> look. this is my second home, florida. to win by that kind of a number is incredible. >> we know we will add to our delicate lead to roughly 300 with over 2 million votes

illinois and missouri award delegates how? r: well, let's start with illinois, which is -- it's called a winner take more state north winner take all. the candidate who wins the state outright would automatically get çá% maintaining 54 delegates are handed out by congressional dis win a certain district you get all of that district's delegates and as a rule the person who wins the state, usually wins the vast majority of congressional delegates. in other words, be very unusual for donald trump to win the state and then lose all the congressional districts. congressional districts, delegates are split up. but missouri has a winner take all trigger. if the candidate gets 50% plus a single vote, that candidate would then get all 52 of missouri's delegates. right now the poll shows trump running ahead in both illinois and missouri. very important for him. >> what happens if trump loses one or two of those states? >> reporter: this is why illinois and missouri are sow

of course, illinois and you end up having illinois is an open primary as well as missouri. ohio is a little bit different than in michigan where people can show up and you can request a democratic or republican ballot. you end up becoming a democratic or republican registered voter. if you want to keep your unaffiliated independent status, you can't vote in the republican or democratic primary. so it's a little bf different than what we're seeing in illinois and missouri, and last week in michigan, but certainly it's not closed the same way that florida is. >> so the difference potentially would be, mark, in ohio, for example, those people asking for crossover ballot could be some of these reagan democrats as we have heard, who in the past supported the democratic party but are now part of this broad group that we describe as the angry white vote. in illinois, the theory is that these are some people who say hillary clinton is in a safe spot. it's a wide enough field for her that they want to stop trump. and are going and voting on the republican primary in an attempt to vo

i should mention on the illinois and missouri races, those are the two races that remain undecided, clinton and sanders both spent almost equal amounts trying to win the illinois race. it's $1.3 million by clinton. in missouri where it is too close to call, the bernie sanders drastically outspent the hillary clinton campaign in missouri and it's a big difference. sanders spent about $1.4 million on ads. so that was part of the reason the sanders campaign has been confident i think particularly about missouri is that they tried so hard there. again at this point it's still too close to call. turning now to the republican race, one of the reporters for "the washington post" who has been invaluable to our national understanding of what's going on, particularly on the republican side of the race this year is robert costa. he has a story for "the washington post" tomorrow morning. i understand it's based on conversations you've had with the three remaining candidates. >> we've dived deep into what's going on in the republican race. it's a three-way race and it's setting up a battle. all the camp

a lot of hope about illinois and missouri among the sanders' folks. there was particularly hope here in illinois, because there has been such a strong grassroots sort of cultivated, particularly around cook county, there's a state's attorney's race here, for the state's attorney who didn't prosecute the laquan mcdonald police officer. she was kicked out tonight. a lot of action on the left. yet still sanders lost cook county by about eight points to hillary clinton. i think that indicates he's probably going to fall short. now, in the sort of apportionment scheme we have on the democratic side, that find in the sense that it hits proportional and he won't suffer some winner take all defeat. the problem is coming out of tonight, looking at a path forward where he has to now winsome where between 60%, 70% of the remaining delegates. the further you go in the process without winner take all, with proportional delegates, the harder it gets. so nights tonight in a place like illinois where they could

next week's primary calendar includes illinois, missouri and ohio. like michigan, midwestern states with a heavy blue collar base. the three making up more than half of the 691 delegates that are still up for grabs. so how do the candidates shape their messages going forward to win those delegates? van jones joining me in washington and bill press, a bernie sanders supporter joining me from chicago. van, i'll begin with you. how surprised was the sanders campaign by last night's results? >> it was a shocker to everyone. obviously they had senator sanders like sneaking out of town. they didn't even wait for the results to roll them out. had he lost, the entire rationale for his candidacy would have completely collapsed. it would have proven this knock on him that he could not grow among black voters and his trade message does not work in the north. turns out he did grow among black voters, his message does resonate and he found an issue, a sleeper issue around the home foreclosure crisis up there that also helped him to break through. a stunner for th
