i want to show you what those images looked like. they're satellite images.t look small at home but they're large, in fact, the three of them, one 43 feet by 59 feet, another 46 feet by 62 feet, another 79 feet by 72 feet. for comparison, a mobile home is smaller than that, 28 by 60 feet, a flatbed truck 48 feet long so these are bigger than that. all in this area here. ma what's interesting, you'll remember in the last couple days we began to hear about this alternative path the flight may have taken. there were some radar signals that showed it taking a left turn going all the way south and west of the malay peninsula here, a last communication so said the malaysian military. a little island right here and then somewhere out to the sea, maybe indonesia, that now, if these images appear to be part of this plane, appears to be soft. this much more natural if in fact there was some catastrophic event when that transponder went off, perhaps a crash, perhaps an act of terrorism. to be clear intelligence officials have told us they have no indication of terrorism

the satellite image. >> absolutely. the satellite image shows debris. it is not as if it is a photograph and somebody is pointing at it. they know where it is. so they know, gps which we're all familiar with. we use in it our cars. they have a general idea of gps where this is floating. in addition to that, the aircraft can see 10,000 square mails. so it is flying on station. which means it is in the area right now. and they have yet to find what it is that those satellite images suggested was there. >> what could be an explanation for that? you know, the disconnect. >> yes. because remember, the satellite image as high definition as it is, is not the same as the quality of the p-8 aircraft. there are all sorts of false suggestions that a satellite photograph can bring. i still maintain that i believe that the australian military would not have announced this suspect debris if they didn't have a high degree of confidence. but that means that so far there's not that redundant confirmation of something floating there. and that's what the u.s. military is

three images, these are the three images that were captured at 11:00 a.m. on sunday. now, this is a day after the plane went missing. still the head of the malaysian government agency involved in the search from the malaysian side said they haven't received or seen these images from china. took several days to release them. we'll talk more about that in a moment. take a look at these images. what you're looking at, three floating objects. the size of each of these three is between 43 and 79 feet wide. and 59 and 72 feet long. those are very big pieces and to put it in perspective the length of a boeing 777 of the model of the missing jet that's missing, extended range is 209 feet long. the coordinates where these images were taken is not far where the plane made its last known communication. according to our weather team analysis based on water currents and speed at which that current is moving it's possible this is in fact the debris site. if the plane went down where the transponder which cause its location stopped working. hundreds of miles away, though, is where t

have you seen this image?t seen this image and i'm sure it is going to be on its way at this moment to u.s. authorities also that are involved in the searching. obviously, this is more good news. you know, if there's more satellite images perhaps showing some debris, this gives them more hope that perhaps they're searching in the right area, which is a big, big relief because, as you know, this has been going on for more than two weeks now and nothing much has been found. >> australian officials say today that mostly it's a visual search, but, of course, these teams hopefully are listening for that ping from these flight data recorders. we understand malaysian is asking the u.s. for hydrophones, these underwater listening devices and that could be really a significant development since the 370 locater beacons may go silent in, what, 14 days now. >> right, these things are made to last about 30 days and that is the battery life of them. it doesn't go silent immediately. it's kind of like any device in your hous

it looked like there were two pieces from debris in satellite images. we can show you those images.one of them large about 80 feet. a second smaller piece and the question is, where is that now? take a look if you can in the upper left-hand corner, you see that white box. that dates this to the 16th of march. we're now on the 20th of march. but they had credible belief after studying these images that they should send assets to that area. in the air, on the sea. joining us now from washington, d.c. is nbc's kerry sanders who has been in constant contact with the "uss blue ridge, a command and mukss vessel right, carrie? >> they've been in touch with the aircraft searching this area. >> the u.s. had as a p a 8 aircraft. i just got off the phone with a spokesman for the u.s. eave. he tells me the pa has now completed its mission on station flying in the target area. found no confirmation of debris. the aircraft is heading back to perth in australia and it will go airborne again once the crew is rested. butt-head line here is that the advanced technology of the p-8 working in the area,

mary, what do you make of these images? >> i'm actually hopeful they are images. because it would end the wondering and start the work. they do seem large but if the plane came down, there have been a couple of planes that came down on water largely in one piece and broke apart at the water. it's always possible. but the most important thing they can get the naval ships there and get the submersibles and start looking again for the black boxes. and sometimes the simplest explanation is the explanation. if the plane experienced a catastrophic failure right there this is where it would be. statistically speaking that's often where it is. a failure of the plane and some issue on getting the plane down. and that's where it would be. let's hope that it can start the real hard work and end the wonder. >> david, yet a lot of people said it doesn't seem like it would have been a catastrophic failure or incident at a high altitude if the plane did in fact turn around and fly a fair distance without the transponder on. if it is found in this area, that brings back the possi

last night, the australian government released satellite images these are those images of two large objectsn the ocean. the government called eight credible lead after the plane disappeared. our andrew thomas has more from sidney. >> well, after what australia's prime minister called the first tangible break through, the spotting on the satellite images of objects of size floating in the southern indian ocean, the search on thursday, proved to be a disappointment, because despite four sophisticated aircraft, flying low over the search zone, they weren't able to spot the objects from the satellites at sea. two satellite images suggest one of those objects is 24 meters long. these aircraft fly very low, less than 300-foot from the ocean surface. and yet because of poor weather, low clouds and rain, they weren't able to make them out. and of course, you have to bear in mind, these satellite images were taken last sunday, it took until thursday for them to be analyzed and work out what they were of note. but of course in that time it is hard to find out precisionly where they were. this area is

the image was taken two days after the australian image that started this hunt. if they are the same objects or perhaps they're a cluster of smaller ones. remember, these search planes are using radar and the human eye from thousands of feet above the water. and these waters are treacherous, with strong current. oceanographers estimate currents move at around 1 meter per second. at that speed, a floating object could, in theory, travel more than 100 miles in two days. so not only are they searching this vast, vast area of ocean, but they're potentially looking for objects that are moving great distances from where the satellite images first detected them. unsurprisingly, the australian government, while leading the search, has been trying to manage expectations, because whatever is in those images could be parts of flight 370. but could also be ocean junk. maybe something that's fallen off a cargo ship, for example. add to all that, there is a low-level warning of a tropical cyclone north of australia. betty, back to you. >> all right. thank you for that. and i w

"nightly news" begins now. >> from nbc news headquarters in new york this is "nbc nightly news" with brian williams. >>> good evening, i'm ann curry in for brian, today, with a number of new developments on the missing plane with 239 people on board, including late today five days after the plane disappeared the release of three grainy satellite photos from china. china's state news agency says the photographs were taken along the plane's flight path. and that what we're looking at here may be part of the wreckage. the veteran ntsb investigator greg fife has stud

so how reliable are these images? >> the images are very reliable.e, as you look at the images, you can see there is also surface waves and whatever, so it's hard to detect the object in the surface. but the images are reliable. so there is definitely something there. the question is, is it a part of the airplane or is it a container that fell off a container ship? it was not in a normal shipping zone. the other interesting thing is that it's a little bit further south of the end of the arc we would have expected the airplane to be on from the satellite data we had. however, it's possible that, because this was i think now six days after the airplane would have gone in, it would be consistent with surface drift. so that extra range could have just been the wreckage drifting over time. >> how much do you believe, if that is two pieces of debris, massive pieces of debris, how far away could the rest of the plane be? well, the rest of the plane could be five or 600 miles away from that. if the heavy wreckage sank right after impact and these are lighter

right now, these are the satellite images. everyone's saying it's the best lead so far in this desperate attempt to find the missing jetliner. the question is, at this point, what are the odds they will have any success? we're going to turn now to john blaxla blaxla blaxland, joining us live from australia. john, i think the first question i want to ask you is this, those satellites spotted something in the sea five days ago. five days later, is it possible now? why haven't more satellites been focused on areas around that to see if they could pick something up? shouldn't we be seeing more images, if there really is debris there at this point? >> well, there's no question that additional imagery requests have gone out, and whatever satellites have been passing over that area i'm sure have been passing their imagery to the analysts of the australian geospatial industry and intelligence organization to analyze and then pass on to the australian maritime safety authority boat as well as the air force people and the navy, u.s. nav

now, if you compare these images to all the other satellite images of debris that have come in during this story, one image shows debris in the area on march 16th. and another image shows floating objects that was taken march 18th. and a french satellite photographed 122 objects march 23rd, just about 120 miles away from now this largest debris field just spotted by the thai satellite. these images are clustered together in roughly the same area. and all of it not even close to land, 1700 miles southwest of perth, australia. joining me now from perth is will riply to talk about how this might impact the search efforts. that had to be great news for the searchers, but at the same time that's a lot of areas to add to the already-strained search. will, tell me how this game changed. >> well, you know, it certainly is helping us step up our game because we've seen the size of the search area reduced dramatically over the past couple of weeks. remember when it was the size of the continental united states and then it was the size of mexico? well, at this hour it's the size of panama, still

welcome. >> thank you. >> what do you make of the images? >> we examined the images. when they are enlarged they are blurry. but they do show a fuse large, the front of the aircraft with what appears to be two cockpit windows - one for the captain and one for the copilot. on close examination, despite the images being blurry, it appears to awes that the pattern -- appears to us that the pattern of the wreckage is not consistent with a water landing. we suspect very strongly that this is not the aircraft. >> you don't think it is. >> we don't. >> based on that. where bo the investigators go from here? >> there are several places for the investigators to go. there are basically three quadrants that we are interested in. the question of security with regard to passport issues, and recent allegations against the copilot, reflecting that he allowed personnel in a previous flight. >> in the u.s. that would be not a given. these are mandated orders by the faa for detective conditions. one involved cracks in the foos large. >> when was that? >> this was relatively recent, wit

and so this is similar to the image on thes a australian satellite image. the families of those on board are so emotional. responding to the the ainnger a the emotion, the malaysian officials are promising to do a better job of keeping the desperate families informed, and we can't forget about the search for the plane on land. right now, malaysia is asking kazakhstan to have permission to search the northern corridor. we have teams on every angle of the earth searching for the missing airliner. from kuala lumpur, australia and malaysia. we have news of the p8 scheduled to take off for the search area. and can you talk us through the assets up in the air today, kyung lah, and how are they zeroing in on the japanese satellite image and if it showed what could be part p of the plane. >> the target area that they want to fly over, and look at it, and what they are doing to d today is that the australians are coordinating all of this, and adding more air assets and not just australia and the u.s. which is rejoining after a couple of days on the ground, but also

we have a new image.but as janice alluded to, we are still 1500 miles away from the southwestern tip of australia. it is one of the most inhospitable places in earth to conduct a search operation. only because it is impossible to get the aircraft out of there. >> and we have the winds that are swirling. >> and talk to me in terms of the tracking. okay, you are the pilot and in the sky and moving in one direction. and this bulk of debris is moving in a fast clip. >> the important thing to know we don't know if it is debris. go to the satellite image. the satellite picture so far comes us with a low resolution. it is empossible to so what it is. the earthquake that was deployed in the south area and check out the initial image. that is already moved. and they found a freighter and dolphens. these types can the containers or dolphens. and it could be a refraction of light they are seeing. it is inconclusive. >> talk to me about finding a wood paddle and scattered debris on the water's surface and what that i

you have to collect the image. you have to process the image. you have to stand the image.erify that what we're seeing is what you think it is. -- scan the image. what we to verify that are seeing is what you think it is. >> in the past couple of years, there have been political tensions. there is a search to cooperate. is there a danger that this could slow down efforts? >> there is a trust deficit. tenseare fairly relations. countries like malaysia and the philippines and others have wary of engagement. there is an opportunity here for china to participate with southeastern asian nations. we need to break through the old-fashioned thinking of international collaboration. we need to work through procedures and mechanisms to deal with complicated situations like we are facing today. need to,s that people in the cold light of day, were through procedures and collaborate on exercises to make sure that when a crisis happens, people can collaborate effectively with little risk. >> who was in charge of this? you have so many nations involved. who will be the nation in charge? >>

they also don't get the image immediately. these satellite images are taken, it takes them some time to analyze it and to see it. by the way, satellites aren't always recording all spots. satellites are orbiting around the earth so you have to wait for it to pass around the earth and you have to get enough of these satellites focused on that spot which is what we couldn't have at first. i wanted to mention the cyclone in that area. we kind of associate that with a hurricane. it's not what it is. it's a storm which is what we call it in this part of the world. the last two search days have been fine, but on these last couple of images you can see this is the next storm approaching and right there is getting close to where this new debris potential spot that they saw is located there, very close, around 75 miles from each other. in my mind, that would be encouraging. i want to look at the future forecast here. the white indicates clouds. the green indicates precipitation. this is model driven so this is what we think it's going

this and the other images. we were here working until 3:00 in the morning and now we have these images. do you think it is responsible for them to be releasing this information? i'm asking because is it giving everyone false hope, including the families? >> damned if fay do and damned if they don't. what i think is interesting is whether it's right for the australii australiian prms to use the word "credible." he may be using the word credible in a technical sense but it's when laymen hear the word credible they are thinking it's it. >> i think it's premature. but let's look back to asiana 214, the san francisco flight. the ntsb, that investigation where the ntsb reported to the 24 media news cycle every day on updates was very unique in terms of accident investigations. accident investigations are historically very quiet. they are very restricted and the release of information is incredibly sensitive. you don't want to give too much because you don't want to lead people down the wrong track. you don't want to
