it has been less than a week since all charges were dismissed against the former imf chief dominique strauss-kahn. he met with his former colleagues at the fund. it could not of been a particularly comfortable meeting because he was forced to resign. this was a bit of an odd thing, was it? >> i think what was interesting -- the fact that there were 15 or more reporters the bank finding a lot of interest still in this case of dominique strauss-kahn. and it was a private meeting with former colleagues, people who've had worked with him for the best part of four years. he clearly felt the need to go back and talk to those people, many of whom are thought to the been quite upset actually about the whole controversy and the way it tainted the institution itself. @ think the point it to make about all this is -- i think the point to make about all this is it he clearly intended to return to france quickly. possibly on thursday. it returns to is, in washington on friday. here he says goodbye to his former colleagues. we could see him going back fairly san. interest in the story continues. >

will of course, have more on our top story on libya, but also the latest in the case against former imf chief, damany xtra sactown -- dominique strauss-kahn. libya was responsible for about 2% of the world's oil production, but that production has slumped since february. oil could start trickling out again within weeks, but experts say it could be years before it is back to normal. >> since march this year, anti- gadhafi rebels have been trying to reopen oil fields as a top priority. this amateur footage shows an attack on an oil field, perpetrated by gaddafi loyalists after its capture by rebels. all production stopped as a result. officials from the national companies say some oil could flow within three weeks, but more meaningful production is likely to take much longer. and it will be some time before it gets up to 1.3 million barrels per day, which is what it was producing before. >> it is about politics as well as repairs. the biggest oil fields are in the east of the country and have been under rebel control for some time, but the oilfields in the west are still subject to export

i think the next leader of the imf is going to be chinese. i think we are in for a real sea change. >> just moving slightly to the u.s. debt crisis, it is different in structure. would you say that is more of a political crisis? >> both crises are political. in the u.s., we have the institutions and the capacity to solve these problems, but we cannot come together across the political spectrum. in europe, you do not have the political unity. those institutions need to be formed if europe is going to surpass this crisis. >> in the u.s., we presume that we do have something called congress. why did they seem so unwilling to tackle this problem? >> i think that you are seeing a tremendous amount of polarization in the u.s. pitt has been an incredibly contentious a few months -- it has been an incredibly contentious few months. the downgrade has been a rubber stamp on what we already know. our country is incredibly polarized. our growth prospects are minimal and there are no solutions to create jobs. that is what we need. >> thank you very much f

former chief economist at the imf, professor of boost school of business. you've been writing about wage stagnation. basically this big dedi vid for a while. this is pretty shocking. median incomes have been so flat, the blue line shows. how come it only becomes an issue after the financial crisis in 2008? look at the red line. that's the top 1% income earners. tell me why. >> well, first, of course, the divide has been growing, as you say, but a divide is not just put in the median and top 1%. it's within the median and people like you and me, you know, at the upper middle class level. that's also been growing. what kept the middle class wide, as you said, is even though income in equality was growing, consumption in equality was not. what made the difference? credit. you had a big takeoff in credit over the last few years, especially credit against your house. that kept people fairly, you know, satisfied. now, as don just said, when the housing bubble collapsed and when the same people who had seen stagnant incomes found they didn't have jobs, the houses
