so she's here in iowa. the first caucus state in the presidential nominating process. so all eyes on the political world are on her to kind of see what kind of message she delivers for clues as to how she will frame herself as a candidate. we're hearing that she's going to attack crony capitalism. some are viewing that as a veiled kind of shot as texas governor rick perry as governor palin tries to carve out some space for herself in the republican field if she does decide no run, t.j.. >> all right. so what is the message behind the rally itself? we know she's the main attraction, but if she wasn't going to be there, i guess what's the significance of the rally itself? >> reporter: the rally itself is sort of interesting. this was developed by a tea party group that only recently developed. a lot of people out here in iowa hadn't heard of it. a lot of tea party kind of legislators out here and activists told me they're kind of like a fringy group they hadn't heard of. it kind of seems like the rally was created just to host sarah palin, to be totally honest. and there

it will help him quite a bit in iowa. he will hope to compete hard in new hampshire but that of the placement romney has tried to keep in his pocket. for three years he has not been running -- but really has been. if you look down in south carolina and rick perry could rise again down there. but you have to consider michele bachmann is still in the race. whether she will last, we don't know, but she can peel off from rick perry's base and in some ways mitt romney's people are looking, if she stays in, ask iowa where the vote could fracture and maybe he could do some what well there. >> is there a role in this for jon huntsman warning -- the gingrich or ron paul? >> i think those people will go by the wayside. but remember, the first vote in this contest will not be cast until january. in iowa -- we have a lot of distance to go. knows what will happen in the next several debates? i think you will find romney will be on -- be receiving more attacks from the other members in the group, especially someone like not only huntsma

meanwhile there is a major tea party rally kicking off in iowa in a few hours.t of drama over the guest list earlier this week, but in the end worked out and sarah palin is set to be the keynote speaker. cnn political reporter peter hamby in iowa this morning for us. people hear iowa, palin, they hear speech and is this the time she's going to make it official? any indications about what she's going to say today? >> lots of indications about what she's going to say, but we know for a fact that sarah palin will not announce her presidential bid here in iowa today even though a couple thousand people have trekked in from all over the country, people from as far as san diego and dallas have bussed in here, flown in to see sarah palin. i think the attention that this rally, this tea party rally, is getting is based on two things, one as you said it's in iowa, the first state of the presidential nominating contecontest. she's been here a couple times in the last few weeks. she has said she's going to announce a bid or come to a decision about whether to enter a race

at the same time essentially does not help you when you have to go up against voters in iowa. >> you have a chart in your book. total web traffic. >> one of the things that the book tart about is that if we are thinking of how the internet is going to change politics we have to start with the facts. politically relevant traffic is a tiny, tiny portion of what people do online. if elected the categories of where people go, more than 10% is pornographic content. web mail, search engines. news and media assets including everything from entertainment to sports, only about 304%. the types of political science, like blocks or interest groups, campaign sites, the new types of political information that was supposed to change everything are about one-tenth of 1 percent of all web traffic. >> how many people were hits does that represent? >> larger than you would think. part of the issue is that people visit lots and lots of sites. according to some members, an average visitor may hit 80 or 90 pages in the day, which is a lot. at the same time the portion of traffic that is going to political

mitt romney has campaigned lightly in iowa. if perry takes off, shows some promise in the debate, begins to gain traction and go after michele bachmann, you may see it mitt romney put more chips in iowa. that would make i was the central and first test of the 2012 nominating contest. host: jon huntsman and saying that he is going to bypass iowa completely. he said that florida will determine knew he thinks will be the republican presidential nominee. let me ask you about some of the other contenders. rick santorum, ron paul appear to have some strong and growing support. guest: that may be. maybe they are waiting for somebody like michele bachmann to falter. michele bachmann hit a high point in june with her entry into the race. with the entry of rick perry, that is going to steal from some of michele bachmann's key voting area. perry is going to take some evangelical conservatives. he is going to take some tea party conservatives. he also has that element of being a strong fiscal conservative. that is going to cut into mitt rom

because people in iowa, new hampshire and south carolina, particularly the first two, had been paying more attention to these candidates, have seen them more and have more firm opinions than do people in states like oregon or washington or florida or colorado or california, who are only now starting to wake up to the process. if you take a look at the individual state polls, in iowa, this was run by a pro-perry group, 24 perry, 22 bachman, 19 romney. that's clustered in there. in a state like this, it's up for grabs. in new hampshire, 36 romney, 18 perry, ron paul at 14. and bachman below 10%. in south carolina, perry at 31, romney -- >> laura: lift that board up. we don't need a graphic department. now we lose them. there we are. is this bachman in south carolina. >> it says to me bachman is still in this thing, but she's got to focus on iowa. what's interesting is the rumor is that she's got a very small war chest and that she's thinking about deploying it and trying to win the florida straw poll. the last straw poll to have an impact on the general election was the iowa straw poll.

somebody -- 1 barack obama -- when barack obama triumphed among the predominantly white electorate in iowa, then that was the signal, this guy could win. the electorate in the u.s. is mainly a white electorate. tavis: what does it say that about black folk, what does it say about black folks along that color line that you so easily say they wanted somebody who could win, as opposed to somebody who stood by their issues and on their principles and number two, there was no suggestion at that time, just because she had won iowa, hillary clinton could not win. choosing a person who could win over somebody who is standing on your issues on your principles and they had not figured that out prior to ira. how do they figure that out post-ironwood? >> black people, did they the policies of barack obama and hillary clinton side- by-side and said this one is better on this one? i think the both figured -- and they figured clinton and obama were liberal leaning democrats. there was a difference. the difference is, barack obama is black. i think many black people thought, this would be a wonderful, an
