an air india jetliner landing too far down a runway built on a hilltop in southwest india and then plunging over a cliff bursting into flames. 158 people died, but incredibly tonight there are survivors, and we begin here with abc's jim sciutto. >> reporter: tonight investigators are struggling to understand what caused an uneventful flight from dubai to mangalore, india, to turn suddenly into a death trap. firefighters in villages raced down a hillside to reach the injured but fire engulfed the fuselage and most of the 166 passengers and crew. but eight survivors managed to escape just before the jet burst into flames. "as we landed, the flight went out of control" said one survivor. what happens in india especially. a country that is now democratic but does not have deep democratic roots and a strong civil society. in indonesia, in russia, in some midsize power such as ukraine, vietnam, at some point probably a united korea, if those countries thoroughly, firmly embrace a democratic market capitalist model, then the international system norms will be democratic market and capitalism. what happens in those countries, brazil i would add to that, of course -- what happens in those countries is far, far more important than what happens in bolivia, botswana or in bosnia, and countries of that size. that's where the victory of this battle of ideas will be won or lost. dr. halper has written a very important book. i've described it as certainly one of the most important books on china and the u.s./china relationship in the past decade. he has done a great service with that. it's already getting a good deal of attention. a number of book reviews. it deserves to get a lot more. and we're very happy here a

in india a horrific plane crash. the flight from dubai to mangalore was carrying 166 people and only eight survived. mark philliphas more. >> reporter: it was the breaking up of the plane as it overshot the runway at mangalore airport that may have saved some of its passengers. the survivors were either thrown free or managed to climb out through gaps in the fuselage as it split apart and before the flames cob assumed it. "there was a blast, perhaps a tire bursting, as the plane landed," this man says. "within five seconds there was fire and smoke all over." "we looked up and saw an opening and crawled through it," says this man. the flight from dubai to mangalore was full of indian migrant workers and their families returning from jobs in the gulf. more than 20 children were on board. the plane, a boeing 737 was only three years old. the airport, though, has a reputation as a challenging one for pilots. its runways are carved out of hilly jungle country and are sited on a tabletop plateau with cliff-like drop-offs.
