the polls have closed in indiana as you've been reporting. republicans gain a seat with republican dan coats defeating democrat brad ellsworth. and tea party sentiment played a bill role in this race. a double-tick on this number. almost half of voters in indiana say they support the tea party movement. that's a huge number. just 27% opposed. and the republican candidate, dan coats, won 85% of tea party supporters. the democrats got just 11%. brian, what a huge change from just two years ago when barack obama won indiana, which now apparently is back to a red state this evening. >> lester, you're right. some amazing stats buried in the there with the tonnage of data we're getting. now with more and more of the raw vote in and this brings us to our studio and our panel here and we'll start with our white house correspondent savannah guthrie. what a difference two years makes. a state that barack obama carried now, 45% of those casting a vote today with self-identifying with the tea party. if you're in the west wing of the white house tonight,

let's start with the indiana senate race. the associated press with about 3% of the precincts reporting, you can see the numbers here. they've actually called the race for republican dan coats, switching to the indiana second district here, this is what gwen and david chalian were just speaking about a little while ago. this is walorski, the state representative there, against democrat joe donley. republican jackie walorski, the tea party candidate here has a significant lead. that's with 5% of the precincts reporting. and then switching gears now to the kentucky senate race. according to the associated press with 3% of the pre-singtses reporting they are projecting that rand paul should defeat democrat jack conway in this race. finally the south carolina senate race. it hasn't crossed the 2% threshold yet for us to have the numbers on the screen but the associated press is projecting that senator jim demint will defeat alvin green in this race. we'll have more results throughout the hour for you. jim? >> lehrer: just a remin

that's mainly in indiana.d turns into ice pellets and snow as you move inland. you're getting away from the warm lake waters. all of this shifts into indiana tomorrow. we think it'll be so cold aloft here that what might happen is the lake stuff shifts into indiana and we'll get these pop up showers in chicago on our side of the lake before the whole thing breaks down and we clear the skies out tomorrow night. it's in the 40s around the city now. and here are high temperatures today. the winds are blowing in from the north at the steering levels. and they are roaring at about 150 miles an hour. and this jet stream dives way down to the deep south. so the penetration of this cold air will be quite substantial. we're getting some strong winds at the surface as you can see. there are windchills at this hour. that's how much temperatures have dropped. look at that area of the u.s. that has cooled off. winds north at 17 and there is that jet stream i talked about. at the same time it's the snow of the carolinas. it
