nbc's john yang leads off our coverage tonight in michigan city, indiana. john, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. here in northwestern indiana along lake michigan, it snowed for the third straight day. folks here are digging out from under 2 feet of snow, and drifts as high as 4 feet. but as you say, the most dramatic conditions were to the east of here. overnight, high winds and blowing snow created whiteout conditions, shutting down a major trucking route into michigan from canada. officials said about 360 cars and trucks were stuck on the highway, leaving hundreds of people trapped in their vehicles. >> how long have you been here? >> going on 24 hours now. >> reporter: winds hit 65 miles per hour, and snowplows were ordered off the roads. police snowmobiles and military helicopters were used to rescue stranded motorists. >> for somebody that's not dressed awarm, it's very dangerous, because you could get cold and run out of gas. >> reporter: area hotel rooms filled up, and people found warming rooms like this church. >> we made it here, th

indiana, can you see anything there?ey have strong winds with gusts up to 30 miles per hour causing near whiteout conditions. and there's a similar scene in michigan. indiana, where john yang is freezing it out there. >> we're here in the frozen shores of lake michigan, and michigan city, indiana, and when i say frozen shores, i mean it. this is a piece of sand mixed with water. that's frozen solid, a piece of frozen beach. this whole beach is coated with ice. and you can see how the ice has formed. it's water. the waves that had come up onto to beach and were on their way back into the lake that have frozen as they were sort of on their way back down the beach. you look at the waves here on lake michigan, they're relatively gentle or low now. even though it still looks more like the north sea than a lake. yesterday the waves were topping out at 25 feet. the harbor master had to chase out surfers out of the frigid water. richard? >> love john yang. even when it's cold and frozen, he likes to go to the beach. john yang in

and in indiana, crews rescued people stranded and at least 70 vehicles today. they were trapped in snow drifts through lake and porter counties on u.s. highway 30. front end loaders are still removing the drifts are some people have been trapped in their vehicles, get this, since overnight. and many roads in the northwestern part of the state are impassable with snow drifts up to six feet high. and onto florida, governor charlie crist has declared a state of emergency. residents are bracing for what could be the coldest december weather in 20 years. their big concern about the crops. kerry sanders joins me now from myanmar, florida. what's the latest? >> reporter: well, tamron. it's going to get cold. that's the real problem. expect it to be 22 degrees in tallahassee. 23 in orlando. 32 or lower in miami. 2 real concern, of course, the crops. citrus. 7% to 10% of to crop has been picked. the temperatures will drop if it gets to 28 degrees or lower for more than four hours, talking about serious damage to the orange crop. also nine out of ten tomatoes are from fl

southern indiana where we picked up snow overnight. most of kentucky has had an ice storm. up to a quarter inch and now winter storm warnings into virginia, almost all of southern west virginia, even a portion of north carolina where we'll see more ice and know during the day today. even a winter weather add advisory for washington, d.c. expecting 1 to 2 inches of snow during the day today. here's a look at the radar. pink is where the ice is. that's been over lexington, louisville, cincinnati, mostly central and northern kentucky really the problem area for the ice. the snow has been prevalent around indianapolis, we already picked up about an inch or two and now that is starting to extend now moving into all of west virginia and eventually that will slide through areas of washington, d.c. and richmond, richmond could end up with 3 to 5 inches of snow out of this. after last year's blockbuster season, it's amazing we're already getting another storm. here's a look -- closer look at the radar, huntington, west virginia, all snow but freezing rain through kentucky. not quite

in northwest indiana, police are searching for motorists trapped in their cars. at least six weather-related deaths have been reported. airports across the midwest are trying to get back on track after a weekend of misery. minneapolis closed its airport for the first time in 19 years. and at chicago's o'hare, more than 1,000 flights were canceled. >> i might not get out of here until tuesday. >> reporter: in the pacific northwest, mud slides from record rainfall sent this house sliding down a hill. three people had to be rescued including a 94-year-old woman. >> she was hysterical. they weren't sure what was going on. >> reporter: more rain is in the forecast for seattle today. and more snow is expected in michigan, indiana, and points east. but football fans won't care. they will be watching tonight's game between the new york giants and the minnesota vikings indoors in detroit. the giants headed to michigan after their flight was diverted to kansas city. sunday's game was postponed and moved to detroit after the metrodome roof in minneapolis caved in from the w
