yes, the 27th indiana did withdraw first. but, this report to many looks like is placing the blame solely on the 27th for the failure of the attack and the casualties of the second massachusetts. as one might expect, rankin is not very happy about this. in 1892, he writes a series of articles to the tribune. this is only seven years after the placement of the monument. he has a fairly fresh trip to gettysburg in his mind. he is arguing between seventh indiana is not directly to the right flank of the second massachusetts and there are two separate actions. this is when rankin writes that earlier quote to go further with destruction, it was over three times the length of a regiment. to stay there was annihilation. the 27th fell back about the same time the second massachusetts retreated. he does not think this blame is fair because both regiments were pinned down. nava could succeed. neither could help each other. the second massachusetts had at least some form of cover. to describe this affair so as to convey the idea of the
