though they've been the indianapolis colts since '84. and ever since 1998, this has been the peyton manning era in indianapolis. he made them champions. he was the player of the decade. and for 14 years he's been synonymous with that city and their beloved colts until today when it came to an end. our report tonight from nbc's kevin tibbles. >> reporter: he's been a company man the whole of his career. same boss, same position, same team. he's one of those rare athletes who transcends sport. >> i've been a colt for almost all of my adult life. but i guess in life and in sports we all know nothing lasts forever. >> reporter: but today peyton manning is no longer an indianapolis colt. >> it's a difficult day here of shared pain between peyton, myself, the fans, everyone. >> reporter: after 14 record-breaking years, injury kept 35-year-old manning off the field for all of last season. now the team is looking to rebuild. still, news of his being let go stopped many in their tracks. >> i understand it's a business and they have to do what the

the colts really are the sport of indianapolis right now. that organization, what happens to football in indianapolis now that the player most closely identified there is not there anymore. >> john, thank you so much. i want to bring dr. elizabeth cohen in to talk about some of the medical issues. he's a young guy with serious injuries, so much so that he wasn't able to play for the whole season. >> right. the whole season he hasn't played. we don't know all the details but we know a bit. he's had injuries to his neck and we know that among others, according to "sported illustrated," in may he had a surgery to correct a bulging disk and then in september. we had a surgery that fused two vertebrae together. we've been talking to doctors who treat professional football players. and they said, these aren't entirely unusual procedures. they've actually done them on players. and if they're done well, they work. and of course there's a recovery time. "sports illustrated" says he did participate in some recent practices but they described those pas

peyton manning is out as quarterback of the indianapolis colts.nning had little to say late last night as he and the colts owner arrived at the indianapolis airport. the team scheduled a noon news conference. cbs news armen keteyian confirms manning will be released one day before a $28 million bonus is due. manning led the colts to 150 wins over 13 seasons including the 2006 super bowl and was named league mvp a record four times. he missed last season because of a damaged neck or nerve in his neck. and the colts collapsed going 2-14. >>> college tournament basketball now to connecticut. in round one of the big east here in new york, jeremy lin led the attack. the huskies win 81-67. it was yukon coach jim calhoun's 34th big east tournament win, just eight days after he had back surgery. >>> had it comes to sports, talking about fair play, take a look at this, though. that's a 100 meter champion. in jamaica with prince harry getting ready for a sprint. he distract him and takes off. he zipped down the track to claim victory over the world's fastes
