let's bring in meteorologist indra petersons.he drew the short straw and live in memphis, tennessee, this morning. how do things look there, indra? >> right now, things are pretty mild. it's that calm before the storm but a few hours away, everything could change here in memphis. the national weather service with its new experimental, the first year we have an ice impact index. is calling the potential here in memphis to be a category 3. what does that mean? potential of over half an inch of freezing rain. you get that ice there, half an inch of ice on the power lines we talked about power outages could last as long as five days. let's take a look at the satellite. the radar show you where this system is. it's already done a ton of damage overnight. look at this. you see those dots, those are the storm reports. we have already seen freezing rain in these overnight hours so anywhere from indiana stretching back in through texas we have seen the system or this line move on through. farther to the north around southern illinois, we

indra petersons, where is it headed next? >> you notice it is warm outside. a warm front in the area and temperatures ahead of this system very mild today with light showers. all of that will change. let's talk about these temperatures. with the windchill added in right now, dangerous temperatures. denver feels like negative 30 degrees right now and minneapolis about negative eight. that is the cold arctic air we talk about that is combining with this front as it makes its way across. the big threat we have been talking about this is whether or not we start to get that freezing rain and take a look especially when we talk about illinois and back through texas today we will start to see that threat of that wintry mix only spreading as we even go in through tomorrow and take a look at this. as we go through the weekend we are dealing with this. saturday early morning it kicks offshore. we are talking about rain, snow, and ice. as far as rain, we will see heavier amounts nashville 2 inches of rain and snow in the back side of it and still anywhere from 6.8 inche

it's hard for people in the water -- >> indra petersons is tracking all the weather. >> good morning. >> we know, no maps this morning. a little difficulty. i'm going to give you what you need to know before you go out. here's the best part, it's not snowing unless. you want to be careful on this morning hours. very cool temperatures. a little surprise here. we've got maps for you guys. let's talk about the mountains. central part. we definitely saw a lot in new york, all the way through the afternoon. but a lot of it melted on impact so it only measured about an inch or so.massachusetts, they got 8 inches and we want to watch for lake-effect snow, lake ontario and erie. it could last until tomorrow. we know it's cold. temperatures below normal. it's down in the southeast, notice places like memphis and atlanta. those temperatures are going to be going up significantly over the next several days which means there have been a severe weather threat by the weekend. you never want warm air coming up against cold air. washington, the first big number one, that's all you need to know. this

indra petersons is checking the forecast for us.e. >> with all of that pleasant news you're injure sharing, right? now let's just bring in more snow. it's not when it's in your morning commute and your drive home on top of it. look at the radar right now. we can currently see the system is make is its way in in philly, you're seeing that snow. you could see anywhere 1 to 3 inches and hot spots could see 2 to 4 inches and that is new york city. that is boston. the farther north you are, especially portland, maine, look at you. 6 to 9 inches of snow is possible. of course, farther back upstate new york could be 3 to 5 inches. let's talk about the system itself and what is expected. we have mentioned the morning commute and seeing that on the radar. the system starting to make its way into the northeast. now by the afternoon today, that is where we see things ramping up especially towards new england. keep in mind the system slowly going to be making its way up the coastline so it's starting earlier in new york city late in the morning

so indra petersons is in memphis, tennessee. 's a hard impact area right now as the storm continues to move. she's tracking it from there. indra, what do you see? >> it looks like it will be a tough weekend as two systems move through the same region, impacting them with catastrophic ice storms. memphis, temperatures above freezing. the line of storms has not moved in the area just yet. take a look at the radar. that's not been the case overnight as this ice storm started to make its way across the country. we've seen reports of ice from indiana stretching back even in through texas. farther to north around indiana and southern illinois they've seen about a quarter inch of ice. it's just around arkansas and tennessee where we're seeing some of the bigger impacts, seeing over an inch of ice already reported. so let's talk about this. there is an ice index, the national weather service, this is the first year they're doing it. right here in memphis, they are talking about this being a category 3. that means we could see power poten

outside in the cold, where better to find indra petersons outside the studio?bit. it's not that bad right this second. we're talking about fairy tales. we had to pan out. we were talking about the lotto. if you're doing a group pool, don't forget my name just because i'm out here. okay. now let's talk about the actual storm. system producing light showers and snow showers around chicago this morning. also little clippers around the lakes and ohio valleys, and northern portion of the ohio valley could see an inch or two today. and the bigger system that we're looking at as a low is forming off the coast, producing heavier amounts of snow. potentially anywhere from two to four inches around new york city, boston. farther up the coastline, though, we could be talking about those heavier amounts. especially if that low forms right along that coastline. you get that extra moisture. as much as eight inches, if not more, especially through new england. temperatures pretty obvious, right? it's snowy and cold. it will stay that way the next several days. that's not the

indra petersons is here. >> good morning. it's nice and mild out this morning. we are loving this a couple of days because we are in between systems. a huge chunk of the country looking pretty mild, at least for a day before big changes start to move on in. very easy this is a waert vapor satellite. waves moving through the southeast. obvious in the pacific northwest. the southeast get light rain but not a big deal but extra cloudy conditions. the upside it's warm. talking about temperatures good above normal. look at memphis and seeing 70s by wednesday. i do want to point out look at the difference as you go backwards. start to see the temperatures drop by the middle to the end of the week. there is a reason for that. a big system out in the pacific northwest but first starting with the east coast. a low making up the east coast and staying offshore this time and not giving us any rain or snow and means the temperatures are kind of going up over the next several days. we like this. temperatures above normal but this is all going to change. a huge snow maker out

jennifer grey is in for indra peterson. let's take a look at the forecast. >> guys. out there. especially in the north. we have wind chill advisories and warnings in place. because it feels 20 to 30 degrees below zero. it's a dangerous cold where frostbasis point can set in, in a matter of minutes. minneapolis right now before the wind chill is 10 degrees below zero. chicago you are in the single dimg its. it is 2 but feeling like 8 below zero and washington, d.c. right now at 37 degrees is what it feels like. we are going to see low temperatures stay chilly the next couple of days. in fact, the cold air will stay in the north. not really going anywhere any time soon. you can see these peaks, that indicates the cold air. it will slowly slide to the east. new york will be at 34 degrees. your high temperature on thursday, but look at friday. 17 and so that cold air is going to seep into the northeast t. good news is temperatures will warm up a little bit as we head into the new year. >> take it easy, then. >> yes. >> thanks so much. coming up next on "new day," a sleep

it's too cold outside for indra petersons. she is a warm weather girl. to times square where it's very, very cold. >> reporter: i'm thinking palm trees and sand right now. it is very, very cold. temperatures in the 20s, starting to warm up a little bit. we're trying to. temperatures will feel like the teens, if you are celebrating new year's eve in times square. it is going to be cold. bundle up. if you happen to be in chicago, it's going to be cold for you, too. 14 degrees is what it will be at the stroke of midnight, with that windchill even more. you'll have a chance of snow showers. just be aware of that. you'll want to bundle up for sure. we have very, very cold air in place across much of the country. and as we continue to watch this next storm system move in. because that cold air is already in place, it's going to set the stage for a very, very cold second half of the week. we'll be watching two computer models the past couple of days. it's going to be crucial. if it takes the path that's closer to shore, this would be the worst case scenario, we

here is indra petersons with a check on the forecast. >> it is slowly getting better a couple of days. we are going to track a couple of systems. everything comes from the west. notice we see a system from the west make its way across to the midwest and then eventually over the lakes and, by friday. tomorrow, some light rain into the northeast. possibly some icing to the north. we will take a look depending on where you are what you're expecting. the amount of snow we are expecting here moderate amount of snow. 2 to 4 in the midwest and higher amounts 3 to 5 inches. the story for the east coast is the temperatures climbing. take a look at this beautiful weather as far as the temperatures. 69 degrees. that is how high we are climbing in new york city. hard to believe we had snow a few days ago. same thing for atlanta and d.c. expected to get up towards 71 but this does play into a second system that is going to be moving across the country because take a look when you have those warm conditions, you have a system make its way across. we have a threat for severe weather into the south s

indra petersons joins me now live.stion is, how much longer is this thing going to stick around? >> i wish i had better news and of course we still have that system in place and this morning, think about poor dallas, everything they endured and yes they had a freezing fog advisory this morning, starting to lift out of the region at least near the airport. in the northeast we're dealing with conditions here where we continue to notice the radar to have a threat of a wintry mix. the system is trying to make its way out of here. notice you'll see we have the threat not only for freezing rain out there but for another system behind it. the snow that we saw is exiting off to the northeast but the tail end of this system that we're dealing with in the northeast, this guy is going to crawl up the east coast and by overnight tonight in through tomorrow another round of this wintry mix primarily though this time a little bit better, not as much freezing rain, primarily just the snow and the rain, but i can tell you myself, sinc

cnn's indra petersons is in the storm's bull's eye, which is oddly memphis, tennessee.ra. >> reporter: the scary thought when you think about this, carol, there's about 20,000 people coming into this city for a marathon that is starting tomorrow, the st. jude's marathon. lot of people are traveling on the icy roads and even though the sun is coming up, the temperatures have been dipping farther down as the arctic air is zooming in closer. for us, the freezing rain west of us, right here right now comes the calm before the storm we know is headed our way. we look at the radar, easy to see where the arctic plunges is, where the storm moves into the region it's impacted so many people, you talk about from southern indiana through texas, they've already seen the dots, those are freezing rain reports, so definitely huge impact is already out there, farther to the north, southern illinois, about a third of an inch, with you down to the south, you nailed it, you're talking about arkansas and tennessee, that's where we've already seen places like ft. smith, already had an inch

chad myers in for indra petersons this morning. how's it looking now? >> when the power goes out, i have a 9-year-old, just think of it like we're camping. it's okay. when the power goes out for four days and never gets above freezing, that's when it gets dangerous. talk about another blow. hundreds of thousands of residents in the northern tier of the country are still waking up with no power, this as another blast of arctic air was on the way. >> it was tough. it was dark. candles only do so much. the fire, you have to keep that going. that's our only option. >> reporter: this morning people in pennsylvania are recovering from multiple mass casualties and pileups on state highways as the dramatic scenes unfolded thursday, first responders rescued more than 40 people injured, transporting a couple dozen to area hospitals. more snow is expected from michigan to maine. this comes as a blow to power crews who have been rapidly working against the ice and freezing temperatures to try to restore power to some of those left in the dark since last weekend. cr

anna cabrera is in boulder and indra peterson is in the severe weather center.ut let's start with anna. good morning. it is beautiful. >> reporter: it is cold here. yes, the snow is beautiful. it's piling up. you can see here in boulder the plows have been busy at work and we're expecting feet of snow in parts of the mount tain area. great news for ski resort, but creating avalanche conditions. the biggest story here is the cold. it is very cold. it's the duration of cold air that we're expecting. colora colora colorado hasn't seen it in years. teens tonight and tomorrow. we aren't expecting to sigh above freezing temperatures until sometimes next week. so under all this snow is ice. very slick conditions creating treacherous driving, particularly in the mountains where we saw i-70, one of the main east/west corridors through colorado had to close down for part of yesterday because of so many accidents and because of the slippery conditions. the colorado department of transportation is now using a special ice slicer, combination of sodium chloride and magnesium
