i think we are just bogged down in our own inertia here and can't figure out how we even get to start. that's a pretty poor reflection on us. i would like to suggest that the way you get to start is how we started this debate out just a few days ago where senator wyden and i came to the floor with the sponsors of the bill, senator shaheen, senator portman and we said, okay, great pweufplt talked about the -- great bill. talked about the advances of this very bipartisan product and effort. then we started talking about amendments, amendments that would actually strengthen this bill. and we had no fewer than a dozen members come to the floor on both sides of the aisle talking about their good ideas, how we're going to build more efficiencies into whether it's our schools or our public buildings, how we can help nonprofits out. these were all good, strong, healthy ideas. and then, you know, we're here today. and as my friend from wyoming has indicated, we're just stalled out. we're not moving forward. the majority leader suggested this morning -- his words, not mine -- that we perhaps wo

know about small-business employees not only from my own business but from the pca members is that inertia is a huge thing going out there with small-business employees, and i'm not sure i know why, but it is easier to be enrolled in stay enrolled than it is to take all the steps to get yourself out of the plan. the same thing. it is easier to let the savings go into the plan than to take the steps to get out of it. so we know that that is also a very effective thing. finally -- on my way over my time? okay, i will stop here. >> thank you mrs. paula calimafde. doctor johnson? >> thank you. chairman nelson, members of the committee, thank you for the opportunity to testify today about the challenges confronting our retirement income system. as you know, this includes how well retirees will fare. we have been tackling this question and using our capabilities to project this for boomers in later generations. today i would like to share the results from the research and some of the conclusions that i drop him now. first a bit of good news. retirements will increase over the next 30 years, even

this is what it feels like to take on the immense and intimidating inertia of big government. this is what it feels like to do what the american people ask and expect and demand. those of you who have been involved in this effort should be proud, should feel energized and motivated to take on the next big challenge. the american people of course expect more and deserve better than what they frequently get from washington. i wish i could say that the fight that has ensued over the last few days were just about obamacare and nothing more. sadly, obamacare is just one symptom of a much larger problem. it all stems from the syndrome of self-importance that the political ruling class in washington tends to feel. the bigger problem in washington is that the bigger the problem the american people face, the more people in washington tend to think washington has all the answers. obamacare, like the fiscal cliff, like our $17 trillion debt, like our almost $1 trillion annual deficit, like our $2 trillion annual regulatory compliance costs in this country, are all the natural inevitable
