police tell ktvu news that they stopped more than 300 drivers last night at a checkpoint in the ingleside. santa clara authorities arrested 21 people friday night and last night. chp officers arrested 136 people in the area during that same period. two of those dui arrests were made in hayward. one driver crashed into a utility pole and fire hydrant. another hit a police car on the scene. christien kafton tells us the first driver may also face child endangerment charges. >> california highway patrol says it all startedded at 12:45 this morning when a ford pickup truck veered off the road and left destruction in its path. >> for unknown reasons the pickup continued and collided into a telephone pole followed by a fire hydrant. >> reporter: no one was seriously injured in the crash. after a short investigation officered arrested the driver for driving under the influence. compounding the danger the woman and two children who had been in the truck. officers say the driver faces additional child endangerment charges. while the officers investigated that incident they say another drive cruisi

the influence of marijuana and a couple of other drivers with undergoing field sent tests in the inglesiderance. officers set up this checkpoint about 8:00 tonight, putting up signs and funneling traffic down to one lane. officers started stopping drivers around 9:15 this evening and so far they have stop more than 100 cars. >> they come up, and they get funneled into a single lane and at that point it's a mutual formula, random pick. as five cars come up, we wave them into your five interview stall and release five cars. >> reporter: the sergeant says typically during a holiday weekend, anywhere from 5-10 will fetarrested for driving under the influence and many will get stopped for trying to avoid the checkpoint and officers typically write 20-40 citations for suspended licenses and other violations. >> the end goal is primarily to keep the streets safe for the drivers trying to get home safely from parties or family functions or going out to dippers, so that the roadways are safe and for education. >> reporter: now many different agencies are taking part in this, including the san franc

meanwhile, in san francisco police set up a dui checkpoint in the ingleside district.ne hour into that checkpoint officers had already arrested two suspected drunk drivers. officers there say stopping drunks is their primary focus but they also say they are out to educate the general driving public about the dangers of drinking and driving. new information into our newsroom about that san francisco dui checkpoint. in all, we are learning that 309 cars were stopped, they made three dui arrests for alcohol, one dui arrest for drugs. there was also a felony warrant arrest and one misdemeanor warrant arrest, six citations for unlicensed drivers, so obviously a very busy spot. meanwhile, here in hayward along mission boulevard, traffic is reopened along mission boulevard and you can see vehicles are moving through the area, but you can expect some delays, one lane is closed so if you're in the area, you need to be aware of that, that that lane will be closed as they work on the repair work here, again, replacing two utility poles knocked out by alleged drunk driver and also
