nbc bay area traffic anchor mike inouye joining us with details of the dumbarton shutdown. >> we typically talk about the bay bridge but not this weekend. bay bridge says not us. it's the dumbarton bridge. we typically talk about construction, blocking a lane or two every weekday morning. why complete closure of the span over the weekend? you know what? we have the seismic safety project, she's going to explain that. >> the entire bridge needs to be closed for the first time on this job this weekend because the crews will be cutting across all six lanes to replace seismic joint with a larger expansion joint. that will help the bridge absorb energy during a seismic event. >> by seismic event she means earthquake. it's earthquake safety. they've done some prep work, getting ready underneath each of the joints. they have to replace joints across the span at once so no one can drive, that means cars and bikes. how do you get across? bus riders will not have change, there's no dumbarton express over the weend. if you're driving you have to use a couple of alternates, one of two, using the san m

mike inouye has the latest. better news. >> much better in the last ten minutes. we had south bound 280 to 85. that intersection was closed but just minutes ago chp and our crew who we had out there, just completely cleared the area. here's what they had. video from earlier this morning when we were out there, that is a cement hauler, that filled with dry cement one of the two trailers overturned. a total of 80,000 pounds. they lifted it up. looks like when they transport a whale out of sea world. there you go, held in midair. they had to move to the cab being righted. this cab is lifted as well as the rig it's towing. you see that blue thing on the left, it's a big air bag. he's like hey, this is to make sure the truck is safe. make sure this guy is safe. get out of the way. they got it back on its wheels. they were able to clear this before 7:45 but had to repair the guardrail. again, just before 11:00 a.m., we have reopened the transition from southbound 280 to northbound 85, again back here on my shoulder you see the interchange, things are moving now through

we have mike inouye telling us how to avoid the bridge. >> thanks, bob. hey, first of all, good note about the winds. all the open-water bridges. holiday weekend, less than 60,000 likely planning on crossing. also dumbarton express doesn't run over the weekend. bus alternates not necessary. if you're planning on crossing the bay and this is your normal route the dumbarton closes tonight at 10:00. your alternates to the south, this is 237 connecting you from 880 in to 101 coming through sunnyvale, that's one of your alternates to the south. to the north, it's the san mateo bridge taking you over the water, highway 92. either of those routes will add about 20 minutes on to your drive. so keep that drive time, add that to the weekend commute. but other than that, those are pretty simple workarounds for you. that's what's going on the dumbarton bridge, but being a "holiday weekend," we have more work going on. >>> we do have a the lo of stuff to talk about in san francisco this weekend. let's check the forecast, though, with meteorologist christina loren firs

in this interview senator daniel inouye talks about if he would have volunteered for service out of the japanese camps as many did. he sebed with the famed 442nd regimental combat team, made up entirely of second generation japanese-americans. he was awarded the medal of honor for gallant action and lost an arm in battle. >> i guess the first question i have for you is how did the two of you meet? >> well, it was after the war because in an organization such as a regiment or battalion, you generally got acquainted with men of your platoon or your company at the most. your name, as you may know a few of them, but as a general rule, you stayed within your company confines. but after the war in discussing veteran matters with fellow veterans, it was, well, unavoidable. the leader of veterans in the seattle area was cakashino. so if you want to discuss anything about the 442nd, you had to discuss base with kash. >> what kind of man was he? >> he was up front, he was honest. he had a good sense of humor. and although he knew that the charges against him were false and should are been cleared

i went in, sergeant inouye reporting. well, what am i here for? he says, well, you're an officer now. all you have to do is take the oath. it was so unexpected, i didn't know what was going on. i took the oath. took a physical and i found that i was physically underweight. can you imagine, i was 115. my waist was something like 27. but hard as nails. my hair was down to my shoulder because we were in combat for about a month and a half without break. it was long. i got a haircut and when weapon got back, the war was just about over. i got into the last, oh, hour or so. by then, it was all over. when i left my platoon, it was one of the smaller ones. i left with about 18 men. when i came back, we had 11. so seven casualties. they were wounded but none were killed. >> you saw that devastation in your platoon as well? >> technically, i did not participate in the heat of the last battalion battle. i had participated in the battles preceding that. >> later on, we probably won't get into it very much, but you take pride as an officer, of not having fata

were volunteers from hawaii that joined the 442, and among that group is somewhere senator daniel inouyea young man that will lose his arm in the war fighting in europe. but also, we also had one internment camp at honouliuli. and so on the west coast there were great camps of japanese-american citizens that were taken from their homes and placed into camps like the large one near lone pine, california, called manzanar. and so, this is a difficult part of this history for a lot of people. and in particular, for japanese-americans that live here in hawaii. they have now these young men to look back on, the most decorated regiment in world war ii, the 442, 100 battalion and mis, military intelligence service, and these veterans are now the ones still alive are in their late 80s and early 90s were recently given a gold congressional medal at a service in washington. so this story still continues.
