truth is senator inouye did not like war. he hated war. he knew the drubblingtive power of war and how people suffered as a result of it. and he voted against a number of resolutions that would commit the united states to military action. but at the same time, there was no doubt based on his ranking and chairmanship over a period of years, decades e he was a person who always at bottom could be counted on to ensure that this nation was well defended, that we did not make mistakes. and he and senator ted stevens had a unique relationship. and when something really developed that was important for the defense department and it involved a danger to our government or could do damage to the department or they needed something really seriously needed it, often times in this government we can't respond and we don't respond effective lifment they would go to daniel inouye and it would be fixed. because they understood that peace through strength was the best way to avoid war and they felt a sense of great response tobblet ensure that the defense d

inouye got here first. a few years ago senator inouye and senator ted stevens invited a number of us to go with them to china. it was quite an experience. senator stevens -- of course, another world war ii veteran -- had flown the first cargo play plane into what was then peking in 1974. and senator inouye was well-regarded in china for that service. and so the group of norse -- there must have been -- and so the group of norse -- ther of se must have been a dozen of us -- got together with the leaders of china. we were accorded every courtesy we could possibly be accorded because of the presence of senator inouye and senator stevens. they were like brothers. they called one another "brothers." they acted that way in private. they served that way in the senate as chairman and vice-chairman and vice-chairman and chairman of the appropriations committee. they single-handedly shaped our american defense posture and they did it with skill and pay troivmen--and patriotism and the that very few could have. severa

dan inouye lived a long and productive life. still i speak for dan's senate family when i say we're devastated by his passing. but we will all miss him. his legacy will live in the halls of the senate and the state of hawaii as long as history is written. his place in the history books will not fade. as the second-longest serving senator in our history, senator inouye's career in congress spanned the life of hawaii's statehood, elected to the senate in 1962. only robert byrd served longer. senator inouye's tradition of service began long before he came to the united states senate. he was working as a medical volunteer when japanese warplanes attacked pearl harbor. he was just a boy, a teenager. from the time he was just a kid, he wanted to be a doctor, a medical doctor, but a different fate awaited dan inouye. after the attack, as we all know too well, japanese americans were deemed enemy aliens and were therefore not subject to the draft. in spite of that, in spite of the humiliation, more than 110,000 people of japanese ancest

dan inouye was as proud as any. as we know, one of the most shameful chapters of american history took place during world war ii, an incredible act of injustice, the united states of america decided to intern japanese americans who lived in california. they were put into internment camps because they happened to be japanese americans. not because they had done anything wrong. not that they didn't love america. but because they happened to be japanese americans. by the way, some of those internment camps were in my home state of arizona. conditions weren't terrible, but they weren't good. people were incarcerated because they happened to be ethnic japanese. in hawaii was a group of young japanese americans who decided that they wanted to serve their country and they wanted to serve in uniform. so one of the most well-known and famous and the most highly decorated unit of the entire war, of world war ii was a battalion in which dan inouye served. they were in many of the most gruesome and difficult ballot -- blood let

senator daniel inouye has died.esented hawaii continuously since it first achieved statehood in 1959. first in the u-s house, and then in the senate. he won his ninth senate term in 2010. inouye lost his right arm during a world war two battle in italy. he was awarded the medal of honor the nation's highest honor for valor. inouye died yesterday of respiratory complications. his office says his last word was aloha. a victory for the teen who took a stand against the makers of the easy bake oven. 13-year-old mckenna pope met with executives from hasbro yesterday. asking for an oven that's not pink or purple so that boys can use it. she says her brother wants one for christmas. well mckenna got her wish. hasbro says it will make a black and silver version of the popular oven and it will hit store shelves next fall. it also plans to change the packaging to show boys and girls on the box. just ahead the car company paying a record fine over safety violations. and, still to come this midday. executives at fast food giant

it was left vacant following the death of daniel inouye. senator mikulski is the longest serving female senator and the longest serving woman in the history of congress. first elected in 1986 after serving ten years in the house of representatives. until now, she was the most senior democrat to have never chaired a full standing committee in the senate. yesterday we reported that patrick leahy was likely to move to appropriations and then you'd have feinstein going to judiciary. mikulski still wasn't going to have a committee. this has now been rearranged. >>> december 28th will be the day the democratic party of hawaii decides who will fill their senate seat. but this morning we have more details on what the late senator himself wanted to see happen. in a just-released tlee ed lett hawaii's governor, inouye wrote, i respectfully request that u.s. representative colleen hanabusa succeed me and continue the work together with mazie on behalf of hawaii in the u.s. senate. i have no doubt that she will represent hawaii with the same fervor and
