we have team coverage with mike inouye watching the traffic. we begin with "today in the bay" live there with the latest. pete? >> reporter: we're just getting an update from chp about this deadly crash. i want to step out of the scene and show you what we're looking at. chp is on the scene of what is said to be a wrongway driver. we're told that just after midnight a female driver driving alone in a volkswagen drove the wrongway on northbound 101. we're told she hit a taxi with a driver and two passengers. that taxi was a ford escape. in as a result of this crash. one passenger in the taxi was ejected from the taxi. the taxi driver was in his late 50s or 60s. no updates on the ages of the other three people who died in the crash. we are being told there was luggage on the freeway. we're not sure exactly where these folks were coming from. the one and two lanes of the 101 north will be reopened in the next 45 minutes. that's what chp tells us. you have traffic over to the right being diverted, our cars are diverted to the third street exit. a m

mike inouye is going to tell us how we can get around all of this. but we begin with "today in the bay's" pete suratos live at the scene with the latest. pete? >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus. we moved under the third street overpass. you can get a closer look at this wrongway crash. you see the damage withhe two vehicles right behind me as investigators are on the scene. here is the information we were told by chp before our last live report. they tell us just after midnight a female driving alone in a volkswagen, one of those cars we just showe you, drove the wrong way on northbound 101 near the third street overpass. now they say that she hit a taxi that was carrying a driver and two passengers in it. all four individuals have died as a result of this deadly wrongway crash on northbound 101 in san francisco. we know that one passenger in the taxi was apparently ejected from the taxi when this crash took place. chp is investigating right now exactly why this driver was going the wrongway on the freeway causing this deadly crash, but we do

mike inouye has been watching this. a lot of people forget about the central freeway, including you. >> including me. i forgot about it. we started talking about this anniversary coming up, all the stories focusing on the cypress and the bay bridge closing. we lost the freeways for a period of time, completely for some stretches like the cypress. but the central freeway used to take us from the bay bridge skyway for those unfamiliar and we used to cut over up and over toward the golden gate bridge. we're looking at this video of the embarcadero freeway, take you off the bay bridge and fly you past the ferry building toward the water's edge and eventually toward chinatown area. it's a forgotten visual. here is a different angle, the tower is the bay bridge. the one in front of it is the ferry building clock tower and could you not see that from city streets because of the double decker freeway. it's a totally different both of those multideck freeways, central and embarcadero were closed after the collapse of 880, after

inouye watching the devastation unfold on television talk about what you saw, kind of what your versionou guys know, i'm from the bay area. my family was there. i was away at college at ucla. a bunch of bay area folks gathered together to watch the bay area face off in the world series and we see this. it goes black and we're chuckle. somebody tripped over a cable, they're going to lose their job and then it comes back on and we hear mention of an earthquake and i ran over to the phone and called my parents and check on them in mountain view and they immediately answer and say, e're okay. later and hung up footage come in aiterally standing up yelling at the screen because i believe we saw live -- >> a car. i was watching the same feed. cars just driving down the bay bridge and there is a hole. >> one car stopping and you're in shock and you don't know what was going on. that was the driver who died on that bay bridge. when the upper deck collapsed on to the lower deck. that was just dramatic. that changed our perspective and no longer a chuckling situation. very serious. >> not only th

mike inouye has been talking about this, a lot of people forget about the central freeway in san francisco>> the central freeway is centrally located. this is the freeway that used to cut from highway 101 basically up across the city, and over here we're looking at aerial shots of another one over at the top corner now as we've taken this panning view, the embarcadero freeway. that one made a drive coming off of the bay bridge and curling around, went up to the embarcadero. you see the tower, you see the bay bridge and the tower in the foregrou foreground, that's the ferry building and the double decks in front of it, completely blocked the view, completely forgotten visual in my mind until we started talking about the memories and i realized my gosh, there used to be these two freeways there. it blocked the view of the ferry building and that was an issue. let me show you on the traffic maps, this is as folks are getting off the bay bridge, we'll show you that both decks were closed. multideck freeways of course were close there had. we have some other video and maybe that wasn't in the s

let's check in with mike inouye. there are concerned spots. >> i want to start off with this. because the caldecott tunnel will remain open as far as we know with the generators in place. so power has been rerouted. we'll watch and monitor this critical area connecting this portion of contra costa county with the maze back and north for the morning commute. the generators in place. that is one point that we're following as we kick into phase two affecting these areas and north bay was affected this morning. and highway 1 flowing through the devil's slide area and same situation with the generators and the freeways are moving smoothly. it is the local streets and roadways that are concern as that kicks in and the evening commute and the afternoon progress because folks returning home may find signals on surface streets out and that is a huge issue, treat that as a four-way stop if there is no lights. over here there may be no light and tomorrow morning. through brendwood and 580 out of the altamont pass and those are critical routes and access to the area may be dangerous as we

mike inouye has been following that part of the story.ot of people forget about the central freeway. >> i forgot about the central freeway. this was before i was the traffic guy. the central freeway helped us cut through the city toward the golden gate bridge off of 101, and we'll talk about what's replaced that now. here there is the embarcadero freeway. right now it's top of the screen, another angle coming toward us and angling down. you see the tower there also, the building with the tower right in front of where the bay bridge tower is. >> ferry building. >> that's the clock tower, ferry building. you can get oriented in the upper right corner, the ferry building and that big monstrous construction there, that's the old embarcadero freeway blocking all views of that freeway. so during that crash, during the earthquake we had damage and the crumbling of the cypress freeway as well as the bay bridge so they had to also close those multideck freeways in san francisco and that was an issue. sorry, take to you a map, i have a quick map to

. >>> mike inouye, you have report of another fire. about that. >> we have sparks and high winds. this is what sharon was talking about the evacuation center south of st. mary's college. unfamiliar to a lot of folks becae brewood is out here. we're looking to pittsburg. they said contra costa fire does not need chp control. that's where kari has been talking about the higher winds, so we follow anything like that report and the traffic. the caldecott tunnel remains open for spots around the east bay, the peninsula, the tri-valley all kicking in now. we have no major problems and that's good news. the lantos tunnel open. power in phase one through the north bay. a flurry of crashes that have happened and then cleared through napa and vallejo. highway 12 over to 29 and airport boulevard just like yesterday jammed up. we may still have the traffic signals out. treat them like a four-way stop and covering the rest of the bay. we do see a little more traffic flow than yesterday. i wasn't sure about because phase two does kick in with more o

i want to get you updated as we check in with mike inouye.i understand he's following the morning commute. >>> we can't forget about the rest of the bay as we look anywhere south of the bay bridge. the bottom of your screen has the most to deal with northbound 85 and 87 recovering from an earlier crash over there in cupertino. that did have the ripple over to 187 but back to the typical patte pattern. down the east shore freeway you're about 45 minutes from the crash on the shoulder off highway 4 to the bay bridge and the backup at the toll plaza. the big deal is in the north bay. we had the winds and the power cut off over there in many parts of the north bay. watch for the local signals. and then the fire, the kinkade fire, causing closure for 128 to pine flat road. there is a corner, alexander valley road from highway 1301 to 128, your connector you'll work around. the evacation area started north of there but expanded to geyserville. we have better lighting for canyon and dry creek road to get you oriented, the kinkade fire is up there in
