in november in kentucky in 1864.dreds of families sent out into a howling blizzard and children who die as a result of that. so there are different violences at which sort of the emotional connection that people have in war helped diminish violence. they're not consistent. they're not predicated on policy. so let me make just a couple of then summary comments in closing here. the first is to note that part of what this teaches us is that the civil war, like all wars, was neither all just nor all unjust. there's really no such thing as a just war in total. what we hope is that as wars are practiced in, is that we participate, whether as soldiers or as citizens of a nation at war, that our armies behave justly. but there has never been and probably never will be a perfectly just war. in that sense, the civil war is entirely unexceptional. we still tend to think of the civil war as a sort of unique event, and there are other civil wars and there's another book back there that i worked on that tries to contextualize them
