at san francisco international airport.heather: you were mentioning earlier, the airport it's about 12 miles south of downtown san francisco. this clearly will be causing some airport delays there and across the country as people travel on this busy 4th of july holiday. we certainly hope that the people that were on board the plane are okay. we see safety personnel are there trying to make sure they can get them off of that plane safely. >> gregg: you were mentioning south of san francisco, it's very close to candlestick park which is south of san francisco. it's surrounded by water for takeoff and landing. there is an industrial complex there as well as an office park. the terminal itself is really out of the way of downtown san francisco as you sort of heading down highway 101 heading south. it is just off to the left in the bay part of san francisco, not on the ocean side but the bay side of san francisco. it is surrounded by water as coastal airports often are for safety purposes. it is considerably away from the reside

there's been a major catastrophe in san francisco at the international airport where a large commercial plane has crash landed at that airport. 291 people on board that plane. we don't know exactly the extent of the injuries, if any. 290 aboard people on that plane. 16 crew members or as they say in seoul, they're telling us, they call them staff members. we call them crew members here in the u.s. they say staff members on board this asiana airlines flight 214. again, that's according to a spokesperson at the international airport in seoul, south korea. some of the pictures that we're getting in now are from people who were fleeing that plane as it was burning, as it was on fire. many of them we are told made it to safety, and, again, we don't know, again, exactly the extent of the injuries, if there are any. we are getting a confirmed report, though, from the coast guard that they transported one person to a hospital. we don't know the extent of that person's injuries as well. a lot of the pictures that you're looking at are coming from cnn i-reporters who were either at the airport or

it's a little over ten hours that it takes to reach san francisco from seoul's airport which is asiana airlines international hub. and we know that asiana which is basically korea's second largest airline next to korean air, is well known for its good customer service as well as this airport which has consistently won awards for being one of the best airports that you can fly from. it's obviously incredibly early in the morning here, and we're waiting to hear any kind of reaction from anyone who was on board that plane. apparently the capacity for 777 aircraft which this is between 260 and 310 passengers. i'll just tell you a little bit more about asiana's fleet has 79 aircraft, and this 777 is a young plane, delivered in 2006. as i said, its international hub is in seoul, south korea, and 21 countries internationally, 71 cities. and asiana has responded to our calls and they're basically just waking up saying that they are investigating what happened. we'll keep in regular contact with them and, of course, with the ministries to get you reaction from seoul which is obviously where this flight originated fro

the san francisco international airport, boeing 777 crash landed at san francisco international airportago. that plane was coming in from seoul, south korea. at this point, no word on the number of people aboard that flight. we know, again, it was coming in from seoul. according to a witness, around 11:20, around 11:20 local time, again, that would be around 2:20 eastern time, but again, this is coming from a witness around 11:20. the plane was just about to land. there was some sort of a problem with the landing gear. coming in from seoul, south korea. the plane was a boeing 777. we know that some black smoke is being seen at the airport. we also know planes flying into san francisco, planes flying into that airport are in a holding pattern. none of those planes are being allowed to land. at this point, we are being told that obviously no planes are being allowed to take off from san francisco international airport as well. we do not have a great deal of information right now. we do have some video, some tape that just came in. you can see the black smoke that i was telling you about.

a boeing 777 has crash landed at the san francisco international airport. witnesses say they saw the plane come in and it appeared to tip. they say the tail hit the ground and then ripped off. one witness says a giant fire ball simply developed from under the plane and the airliner flew into the grass as passengers evacuated and emergency crews rushed in. here's what we know right now and i must admit there is a lot we don't know. here is what we know. there are at least 28 people in hospitals in the area. san francisco general hospital says they have ten ctically injured and two children. they also are expecting 15 more patients. we also know that there were 291 passengers on the plane and 16 crew members. 61 of the passengers we are told are americans. and the ntsb, national transportation safety board, is sending what they call a go team to san francisco to begin this investigation. people were -- who were on that plane already shared some pictures with us. this is what they saw. smoke pouring out of the plane. flames in the windows. people jumping down

. >> reporter: busier than expected here at oakland international airport. 11 planes were diverted here from sfo. eight of those were domestic flights. three were international flights. and that's a problem because normally, there are no international flights scheduled on saturdays to come here to oakland international. so they were not prepared customs agents so basically people had to wait on the tarmac until agents from sfo were able to come here to oakland international. we also talked to travelers who had to change their plans including one woman who was at sfo and knew that there was going to be a lengthy delay. because of what she saw. >> it just lookedlike a big ball of smoke, there was fire trucks and comes and you know -- cops and you know all sorts of stuff going down. >> at that point did you realize there's no way we're getting out of here? >> pretty much at that point yeah. >> when they said the plane was on fire at the end of the runway then it was like well hum i don't think we're going to be going anywhere for awhile. >> reporter: a spokesperson told me the airport is r

the san francisco international airport at 11:27 a.m. pacific time, a both 777 with more than 3 pun people onboard crash-landed. two chinese citizens were killed, 182 people taken to the hospitals. welcome back, everyone, to a special early edition of weekends with alex witt on this sunday morning. nbc's jong yang once again joining us from san francisco's international airport with more. john, what is it first up the investigators get focused on today? >> reporter: well, alec, the investigators actually arrived yesterday afternoon, and they've already been going through the wreckage, the burned out fuselage that's sitting outside the runway, runway, 21 left. you can barely make it out behind me. we're a quarter of a mile from there. and the debris field as it spread down the runway after hitting the seawall and then slamming onto the tarmac and skidding down the runway. they have already found the two data recorders, the black boxes on that plane. one, the flight data recorder that tells them the performance of the aircraft, exactly wha

the airport itself averages over 1,000 flights per day. it is the international terminal. it's also the largest terminal in north america. we are looking at pictures of the schematic of the airport and on the left you are looking at the crash scene. that is the flight 214 which was supposed to land safely at runway 28 "l". something went wrong at the very final moments of the landing according to robert mark who we just spoke to. a commercial pilot who has flown into sfo himself. we also had our own jon scott and licensed pilot calling about who or what, if the computer would be in control at that point in the landing or if in fact the pilots are in control. both are saying at that point, it's usually the pilot that is landed by hand. according to weather reports, the weather conditions there were pretty perfect. >> rick: it is on the bay. san francisco is known for a lot of wind and that could have very well played a role. it's too early to say. zwron was talking about a phenomena called microbursts where sudden airflow changing cause a lot of problems for a pilot who is t
