we are on interstate 880 northbound on vast avenue. it has been cold and rainy off and on for several hours. th freezing ice roadway caused problems for a chp officer. an accident shut down the highway for many hours. an officer was patrolling interstate 880 when he saw a car on the side of the road and went to help a driver. that's when the white vehicle came up and struck the officer. >> he was disabled over here on the right shoulder. one of our officers came over and assisted. i think he was helping with a tire but i'm not sure yet. another vehicle came from the slow lane and struck the officer. >> reporter: now the officer was taken to a nearby hospital. it's believed he has a broken leg. now once again if you can come back here live, the roadway is coal it's not cold but the roadway is wet it's slick. you want to stake caution this morning when you are driving around this area. it has been isolated in some spots. be cautious when you hit the roadways because you never know when you will hit that patch of ice. >> all right paul. t
