we have a deadly crash on interstate 880 southbound. this is video taken shortly after the crash happened. it happened just before 3:00 this morning. a car involved with a truck here, southbound 880 just before 66, a set of doubles, fedex, the back set flipped over and there was an injury crash. southbound 880 is closed at 66, however, you can get off the freeway and get right back on the freeway at the same spot, pretty complicated operation here, and they'll be tied up with this for a while. i want to show you 880, a live picture of it right now. what's happening, as i mentioned people are getting off the freeway and getting right back on, past the accident scene and it's creating a traffic jam in the area, southbound on interstate 880, i would advise you to use eastbound 580, if you can, the traffic is going to be busy. eastbound 580, the big rigs are allowed to use 580 temporarily, they're not allowed, but big rigs air loud to use 580. this is the look at the back of fairfield commute. this is looking good driving into the area. a l

then i'm in the five or six vehicles that are on interstate 5. there were impacted and crushed and hit by those following trains. sound transit owns as part of the track. this was the inaugural journey down this track from seattle to portland, and the whole point of this new train track, new train route was to save about 10 minutes and travel between seattle and portland. this was the very first time that this commuter train, as passenger train took this track down to portland. 70 passengers were on board, five crew members also. a team from the ntsb is coming from d.c., and they will have a news conference later this hour to update us. this was a sharp curve, where this train jumped off the track. the train tracks parallel i 5, and this is exactly where the train left the track. this was a highly controversial move to open up this stretch of tracks for the commuter train. they were lawsuits trying to stop it, people were warning of accidents exactly like this. it happened. right now, we can tell you that run as she began 11 months of the loan. b

where the train derailed is along interstate 5. south of seattle.ou know, what you're seeing there is it looks like maybe the second or third car in behind the engine. has gone off the freeway -- gone on off this bridge onto the freeway there. the lead car after the engine also sort of dangling over there, and then perhaps another car that's derailed from another angle. so, this is a fairly serious derailment. if you think back a couple of years ago, to amtrak 188 where you saw a pretty bad accident there, just a couple of weeks ago we got a ntsb report on a fatal accident involving amtrak that was critical of the railroad and safety culture. in fact it found 29 failures and latent conditions that indicated, i'm quoting from the ntsb, a systemic problem with amtrak's safety culture and found that amtrak's safety programs weren't efficient. we don't know the cause here. we don't know what has happened. but certainly these look to be fairly standard amtrak or regional cars. i can't say for sure that at the same time they were involved -- that were sim

you have to slow down for this curve just like on a regular interstate.be an 80-mile-an-hour interstate, but you slow down and certain curves and areas. that was the case here. that a 30-mile-an-hour speed restriction. if you look at the wreckage and the way it is distributed, this train had no barriers on either end. the freight locomotives and the dirt on the long side the interstate, is that dark blue that is still on the track. the things that strike me, the tract is relatively undisturbed. if you look at the aerial shots, the trap does not look like it is broken up at all. the lead locomotive was straight off that curve. almost like he drew a tangent. like it derailed and went straight on because of high speeds. that's look like may be an indicator of high speed taking a look at it. >> neil: thank you, former ntsb investigator. so much we do not know. they'll continue to take a look at it. we also want to look at some of the things that involve -- but we will exasperate it when it to finding it. atlanta's airport, with a visit airport on the planet.

but many carriages have come completely off the track and one is hanging over the freeway, the interstatee which goes the full length of the west coast of america. more than 70 people have been treated in hospital. there are reports of several fatalities. we are still seeking confirmation on that. as for the cause of this derailment, we don't know. there is a lot of speculation locally that speed of the train might have had something to do with it. this was a new route for this train, day one. it was a new route designed to be faster on a railway previously used forfreight trains, faster on a railway previously used for freight trains, but improvements had been made to make it possible for passenger trains to follow this route. so that is clearly one of the lines of investigation. but the focus is still on the injured and getting people to safety. we don't know whether everyone has managed to escape from those carriages. we would hope so, more than a couple of hours after this development happened. as viewers have seen, there are no reports of any motorists' deaths, which is extraordinary
