we talked about iot but really the question there is, what is the real benefits of iot? we can collect all this data but unless we take action and which have to take action meaning somebody has to take action with some infrastructure. that is where the smart city comes in and issue with the smart city is that it is very fragmented like iot still. every city does literally its own thing. it is not to scale or to business because they can not resell their product from one city to another city. important pieces is the rep flickability, scalability and sustainability. we need to find those kind of models to really catalyze the deployment of iot and when i say catalyze, you can not just pump into money in this. you have to have some goal and directions. you have to find the right model that creates a real benefit for us. real benefit, without the real benefit, these iot smart cities, whatever you want to call it will not be sustainable, okay? and that ace the key and that's the theme that i have all in my program in all these presentations. so i'm going to go backwards. okay.

if we apply this to iot. we have pretty much a standard data diagram here, and when you start adding iot you need to add things like a connectivity platform that takes into account internet of things. you need to have maybe some specific network elements. at cisco we are creating routers and switches, making small form factor, making all the things what we call swp, size, weight, power. in addition you need the sensors which is what we talked about all day here today. and you need, what are you going to do with all this data? so you want to have these applications and processes that take advantage of it, and we talked about that today also. in order to do all of that you need the data and analytics and all of the things listed here. and most importantly from my perspective is you want to spread that security throughout the whole system. when people say peter, you are after talking about security in the network, how do you secure these iot devices? my first thought is, well, you can't because they are not desi

what is iot going to promise? if you look at response times, if you take a particular event, at to that event, the more data you have, the more knowledge, benefit, opportunity, you can prepare for it. if you think of something like 9/11, had we had more information up front, we could've had the opportunity to prevent that event. as they move closer to the event, the opera to do something about it decreases. after the event to have the reaction. if i'm able to respond quickly, i can alleviate the impact. we were able to get fire engineers. had the firefighters not been there, many more lives would have been lost. it's pretty easy to extrapolate how that curve works. it is the same on the other end. taking opportunity, knowing something up front cover and knowing which way the stock market is going to go i can move my investments and get a lot of benefit out of that. as we are going to see, and these reaction is i'm talking about, they continue to shrink. we have let someone time to react. what we find now is our te

and the road is where the benefit of iot comes in. when i have the ability to put sensors out there to integrate data streams from all these different data sources, to be able to simultaneously correlate events that are happening within my network, within the social media realm, within my external agencies and other departments, when i can bring all that data together and be able to make sense of it and use it, then i can get back ahead of the curve. i can start to turn anything into an opportunity. i can reduce the impacts. i've got a much quicker reaction time. over all, the benefits, you know, youngest improved situational awareness. which i put sensors out there, when integrate all the different data, i can start to see a bigger picture. i can understand more what's going on. i can be proactive in my cybersecurity stands. so i understand exactly what's happening to i could start to lock things down. i can prevent things like we're doing across the agencies are not going to name names but we all know what's happened recently. comba

but more importantly, you look at the range of health and fitness related iot devices and types of biometricseing watched. and if you put those things together and collect the information in a standardized way, it tells you about yourself and you change your behavior and nutrition and exercise, i'm not even interested in that. i'm more interested on what effect that has on the health care industry. so we have -- in western civ, we have a professional class of doctors and health care informational and they could only tell you yu blood pressure and glucose level and oxygen level and that is how the health care industry for better or worse has been structured. now suddenly as an accidental consequence of the cheap pretty sunshine a world in which every patient has that information about themselves. and they are collecting it, analyzing it and getting feedback and changing behavior as a result of that. how does that effect the health care industry and it's model of both delivery and training of professionals an so on. that is what i think of the second order of effects from an industry standpoint
