i have covered a lot of campaigns in iowa, and the iowa press likes to go out to ask potential presidential where you are in iowa right now? >> well, wolf, sarah palin is running a unconventional campaign in iowa if you want to call it a campaign. this book signing tour is strategic, because she has two stops in the state, but last week at her other book signing in des moines, she was asked questions in an impromptu fashion by reporters and she took time to answer them, but in the same fashion here, sort of yes or no, and very short, and abrupt responses, but if you ask the folks in iowa, they would like to see to see their candidates in the flesh and put them through the paces, and it's going to be interesting to watch sarah palin to see whether she'll evolve to how they like to do things in iowa. >> iowa is first in the nation as far as a political contest is concerned, and the straw poll, the republican presidential straw poll happens in a few months. in august most of the candidates will be there for that. they have to make quick decisions. in the meantime she's selling lots and lots of

but getting back to iowa. she talked about how the people of iowa have her back. that the people in spirit lake where this book signing was going on had a positive response. there was some 500 people, more than 500 people lining up to get an autograph of her books in a town of roughly 5,000 people. just a sampling of how popular she is. >> how long is she going to stay in this tightly-controlled media environment if she does want to run for president? >> reporter: you know, i think that is the big question surrounding this non-campaign she's running right now. she has basically a year and a couple of months before the iowa caucuses. if she's going to jump in, she's going to make that decision before then, but she doesn't have a whole lot of time. and quite frankly, the people of iowa, have this very unique caucus process here. and they're not really into candidates who sort of dodge questions from the media and avoid the general public except for these tightly-controlled settings. i don't know if that's going to go over quite well in iowa. but right now as all of

i was in iowa. i was executive director. we hadn't been republican since 1948. it had been since reagan's reelect two decades earlier and we were just one of two states that year that turned it around and go republican. and then in 2008, i was responsible for the midwest for senator mccain and governor palin in the general election. there was just one target state in 2008 contested by both sides that went from mccain-palin. that was the state i ran, mose. and like iowa four years earlier, most was a state that had a history of voting not for the republican but for the winner in the presidential election regardless of party and that same night was going from a republican governship to democratic governorship. so we found a way to win a swing state when no other was going our way. so i've got a consistent background particularly in the presidential level of learning how to win tough campaigns and hard cycles and swing states. and while we certainly have other qualified candidates running for chairman, i don't think any of them share that background. >> let me ask

unemployed school teacher from esterville iowa, wrote me. she said i never felt so humiliated in 20 years. i've been a productive and hard-working woman since i was 19. now i feel insignificant. she wrote me that this summer. this month she wrote me again. she said, i have tried to find employment in other states, all over iowa, in every form of employment you can imagine convenience stores, fast food, factories. i'm a high school math teacher with three college degrees and i can't find a job. if it weren't for unemployment, i'd be on food stamps. but without unemployment insurance, she doesn't know what she's going to do. just lost hers a couple of days ago too. these are two examples. but there are millions in this season from now until new year two million people will be put off if we don't continue these programs. in iowa, my home state, more than 10,000 people will be cut off from their benefits during this holiday season and if we don't do anything, we'll face six million by april. left without any source of income hanging by a thread.
