[applause] [inaudible] >> an answer to your question about all i iowa. why iowa. when i was 21 i had more lunches and breakfasts with potential presidential candidates that are amish or you had an opportunity to interview. and i have asked those questions to those individuals that no reporter will ask. and i have demanded an answer from them and unlike other parts of the country, i had a young man from detroit, young black man who came and said it is their future for me and my children. you drive across iowa what do you see and he says icy abuilding with windows knocked out. we actually see the world and we see what it takes to become a leader and that is the message. but you don't do a good job telling the country about the message. when the country looks and questions why i love -- what is your name? >> steve aftery. >> that is an answer. i -- not that you sit down and have a meal with them. there are opinionated people across the nation. i got a job from doing it. but what do you see when you come to iowa? you see as far as you can see. you can go as far as you

i was in iowa, so i must be running for president. i kept going back to iowa, new hampshire, and south carolina because every time i did i got covered. that's what i wanted. i wanted to be heard. host: republican rick santorum. this headline from "politico," saying states eye later primaries. next caller. caller: i found your show interesting. in michigan and in the last election cycle the democrats tried to do this. it kind of failed on us because the party did not follow what people in michigan wanted. my take on this is it might be a better system the parties got together and possibly go with almost like a blind draw. every state has a number in the hat, they call the number, that is when your primary is. it lessens the influences of the state. host: and yet the new hampshire has in there by law that they are first in the nation regardless of a lottery or any other means. caller: here is the thing. this is a process for the parties, not the state. they choose their candidates from the primaries. it should be up to the parties thems

there is no place like iowa. we love it, and it is wonderful to be in a state rehab the king of conservatism, steve king. steve and i are actually a cage team match. in washington d.c., we like to get in the same arena and fight the same fight beginning with one of the fights that president obama brought to us. does anyone remember the trillion dollars stimulus bill? we were all promised that we would never see unemployment go up 8% if we spend a trillion dollars. let me ask you a question. did president obama correctly diagnosed the problem with job creation? did he have the correct solution was spending a trillion dollars? what is his level of credibility on job creation? not so much. iowans are very intelligent people, besides being extremely good-looking and very well tempered. also another area that steve and i have teamed up on is the issue of obamacare the government takeover of health care. let me ask you did the president correctly diagnosed the problem with health care in this country? it was high costs

we saw big news this week in iowa, mike huckabee launched a successful iowa campaign. really interesting to see this early -- last time we thought it was too early. >> but it's funny. we have some candidates who are trying to get their baggage out of the way. newt gingrich this week, dan balz tried to explain, went on the christian broadcasting network tried to explain the three marriages and blamed it partially at his drive at work, the drive he had in washington, how passionate he felt and made him ignore his home life. is that going work as a me mea culpa? >> i'm not sure that's "the last word" we'll hear from gingrich about his personal life. >> he's trying to deal with it early. >> i he is. all smart candidates try to take negatives off the table very early. voters pay attention to things at different types. even said this goes to a very small audience. there's a much larger and important audience and that's the voter who will hear it at a much later time. we'll have to see like a state in wisconsin where religious conservatives are an important part of the caucus

the traffic in iowa has been intense. the midterm traffic was not what it was in the 2008 cycle. >> what happens under the radar? who was talking to whom? what are they talking about? >> when they show up, they will hold these private meetings and the meet with the governor. they meet with key interest groups and the state party leaders. these are private meetings aimed at showing their face, suggesting there will be here once the campaign starts to roll. >> what you expect over the next few months? >> marches the unofficial kickoff. we have events like this. a very important constituency. that kicks off a busy march and in april, it will get busier. we will have people like haley barbour finishing their legislative sessions. we will have more candidates as spring rolls on. >> is this a time to one of the activists? >> you spend the money. it is lighting up the activist outside iowa and rolling forward is when they will start raising money. >> there is some speculation the date of the caucus could move. what is the likeli

i visited 140 towns in iowa and 100 in new hampshire. i placed 10th in both, in what they call an extremely long shot. [laughter] my question for the palin is a general question. the military and the catholic church have each existed across thousands of years in different cultures was about a dozen levels from priest to pope and private to general. how can we in some creative way reduce the level of bureaucracy and our government which until that happens nothing intelligent will probably happen. >> i think have already answered that question a couple of times. the first thing have to do is get rid of the monopoly borrowing system within the government work force. before you do that, you cannot make any other changes because it is all controlled by this union contract that gives the unions all this extra power as opposed to all the rest of the citizen it ought to be dictating what the government spends its money on and how much it spends. instead we have a situation where the union sits across the bargaining table and they cook up the pla
