grant would was born outside of animosa, iowa. he lived here until he moved to iowa city in 1935. that is just 30 miles away. he was artistic from a young age. we have every early sketches dating from 1906, possibly 1904. he was always really artistic. that may have been a little difficult for him growing up. his father was a quaker. he grew up in a relatively strict household. he was always really creative. he went off to europe. he went to your four times during the 1920's to study because that is what artists did. your artistic education was not really complete until you went to europe. for the early years of his career he was painting in an american impressionist style. a lot of loose expressionist brushwork. even paying a very quickly. during the mature phase of his career, he slowed down. he developed this hard edged more linear style. that coincided with him coming back to his last trip to europe that he took in and realizing 1928 that the midwest was just as worthy of midwest artistic consideration as europe. he wanted to paint what he knew. he wanted to paint the people a

, iowa around 1911. it is the same type of thing with the mining. the company does not want to allow unions. they did not want to deal with fair wages, so again, they brought up strikebreakers. may brought them up a train in waterloo. well withot go over the citizens of waterloo who were very much behind the striking workers and it was very difficult when the strikebreakers arrived, they were really not wanted. no one would rent them. they had no money to buy homes, so what the railroad company did community a box car families, sets of families all shared one boxcar. the hostilities of the people living in waterloo, they were looking at a population that had very few african-americans, about 30 at the time and in the span of a few months, they are looking at 400, so it was a mass exodus, a takeover of their town in their eyes. they were really ostracized for being there in the area set up was run along the tracks and it was dealt a smokey row. the press at the time equated it with a devils den kind of ar

they were here in iowa. mcgovern was from south dakota, and they seized on this, and part of it was these caucuses which start early, people would take care of the usual party business. and a lot of people that leave, and they encouraged a lot of mcgovern supporters to stay until the end, and the elected delegates and elected george delegatesecca gets -- , instead of others were other candidates. since then people saw what happened and how it worked, and so everybody has tried to replicate that in one way or another. one of the starts to the campaign or to our coverage is the iowa state fair, whether an election year or not. you look for who is coming to that fair, who shows up. then you look at the democratic and republican party events, lincoln day dinners, jefferson-jackson dinners, those sorts of things, who are the speakers from who are showing up, and you get an idea who is checking out iowa and checking out iowa voters. this cycle, it is mostly democrats, as we do not expect anybody to present a serio

the iowa caucuses are 279 days away. joining us now is cnn political director david chalion to break down the numbers. this is a bigger bounce than expected. >> it is a big bounce indeed. we should note, this is the first poll that we've seen conducted entirely after joe biden rolled out that video last thursday, alisyn. there is the horse race, as you said. joe biden way out in front, 39% of democrats are backing him. 15% for sanders. warren, buttigieg, o'rourke, harris, all grouped together in the next tier. let's look at where they were last month in our poll compared to now. look at that biden movement. that is 11 points higher than he was just a month ago. this clearly is a bounce out of his rollout, out of his annou e announceme announcement. the only other candidate to make a big jump, buttigieg went to 1% to 7%. o'rourke and harris go from double digits to single digits. sanders went down even to biden and a bit to buttigieg. here is something i want to caveat, so folks are aware, where the support is coming from

not only do we have droughts in iowa. then it's followed by flooding. your last big flood was in 2011. now it's 2019. i promise you, your next big flood will be sooner than the last one. because that's what the impact of global climate change is. so i what the impact of global climate change is. i believe in the green new deal. the fact is it's an aspirational goal we need to try to reach. john q. kennedy said i want to put a man on the moon in ten years not because it's easy but because it's hard. he knew it was an organizing principle, it was the thing they'd compete against. they'd compete with russia to be the first one there. it was the space race. so why not create a green energy space race? why not compete with the chinese to say we are going to be the first country to get carbon zero emissions. we're going to be the first country to figure out how to have renewable energy resources whether it's wind, solar, thermal. why not inspire every kid in america to want to be that engineer or scientist or mathematician who's going to figure it out? and th

i'm in a small rural county in iowa.oing to back out of the room here so we're not disruptive of those folks. on the education plan, booker laid out a couple points. he was a little defensive of charter schools and his support there in the past, pointing out that this worked well for him in newark, but it's not something he wants to see done super broadly in the rest of the country. he wants to make sure our public schools get stood up first. and something around the edges where our federal government can be effective, like helping with mental health services in schools, making sure children get pre-k, making sure special needs are taken care of. the most vulnerable folks, he says, are the ones that need help in the educational system. on the question of where booker fits into all this politically, it is interesting to go to these events and see the case he's trying to make. he has significant staff here in iowa. he spent time here in 2018 in the midterms, helping other candidates out. there is not the overwhelming sense

i noticed the farmers in iowa and people living in rural iowa have the same problems and challenges wene just closed in youngstown. people do not have axes to good manufacturing jobs. plants are closing. downtowns are diminished and we need to vitalize -- to revitalize her downtowns. farmers need to be a part of the solution. i'm going to go heavy into the rural areas, too, because we all have the same problems. >> thank you.
