out of iowa. so, that showed us getting together and being able to bring individuals together, not only in urban but rural communities, that we were able to then send a message to the country that deals with these ills. i'm not sure the caucus is the problem. i think the problem is the ills we refuse to deal with and deal with the reality. the racism, the phobias. you know, because what stops latinos from voting isn't the caucus. it's gerrymandering. what's stopping the blacks and latinos from voting isn't the caucus. it's racism. and so you have other cities, other states that are predominantly people of color that can't elect officials of color because of those issues. so changing the caucus isn't going to resolve the issue. dealing with the ills resolve the issues, and when we look at, you pointed out we haven't elected a person of color and that type of thing, then went to look at how many senators do we have in this country? that does not represent people of color in this whole country. when

theyfought with iowa now keep iowa first and nh second. the law in new hampshire reads there should be no light con test. bill gardner, secretary of state who run things in new hampshire, he is very good about making sure that he is prepared to all christmas eve, new year's eve, or valentine's day if he needs to. new hampshire is extremely homogenized. it does not look like america. it is largely white, it is frankly not as conservative on the republican side as it could be, representing other states, and it's not as liberal on the democratic side. day, you can pull a ballot from either party. not only do democrats and bothlicans, the faces of parties, have the opportunity to vote after being organized a number of years ago. as one woman said, i never vote for a candidate i have not danced with at least twice. it is a small state. you can drive the length of the state very easily. it makes for great television because there are high snowbanks and everybody gets to buy a ben jacket. the optics are great from a television standpoint. at the

that will not stop iowa from having caucuses. it won't stop iowa from having an event.really going to be the candidates and the media who decide that. here is what iowa brings to the process. let's say we had a national primary. what kind of candidates would be competitive in that? probably not pete buttigieg. four years ago probably not bernie sanders. what iowa does, and this process which is a little more arduous than just going and casting the vote or mailing in a ballot, it gives us stronger voice to the progressive activists in the party, gives a stronger voice to the conservative activists in the party. they're willing to get a chance and a voice and a hearing to different kinds of candidates. it also gives an opportunity to candidates who aren't the billionaires in the field, who don't start with national name recognition. it gives a run for the money and makes the candidates like joe biden, national establishment candidates, make them work for the nomination. >> i think there are certainly pluses in the new system. for the first time ever, some iowans will be c

i was out in iowa last weekend and talked to more than three dozen iowa democrats after events, and they to a "t" told me the main draw they had for joe biden wasn't his chairman of judiciary committee, chairman of senate foreign relations, his role in the bork nomination. all the stuff that has made his career such rich fodder for his critics, but it's that he alone is seen as the most dynamic to defeat donald trump. and really democrats in iowa, that is what they're really looking for. i will caution, though, that talking with very senior members of the biden orbit, they are not only emphasizing the electability argument but downplaying the importance of iowa and new hampshire. they're bracing for a long fight, one that may have some surprises in a couple weeks in iowa and in new hampshire. two states where biden is running strong, but two states that don't really look like the base of the democratic party. >> that sets up a very interesting conversation too. we've mentioned it here. if the front-runner were to lose both iowa and new hampshire, so far we haven't seen when those states

presidential campaign in iowa.just saw from jeff's piece, it is so personal, these, you know, citizens get to spend more time with these candidates than in virtually any other state in the country, but i think right now this race is sort of broken down, you kind of have the top four where, you know, it's sanders and warren and buttigieg and biden and any one of them really could -- is positioned to potentially win this thing. pete buttigieg is spending the most money of all of the candidates in iowa. he has the largest staff. he is spending the most on advertising, but it's also important to remember the quirkiness of the iowa voting system, which is that on caucus day any candidate that doesn't get 15% of the vote, you know, those -- their supporters can then revote a second time and go to their next best choice, and so there's a lot of shifting of the ground, which is why it's very common that people in the lead in the polls in iowa end up not actually winning on caucus day. >> really interesting, and that's all

can he turn things around in iowa, and how well does he need to do in iowa?in mind, bill clinton did not win iowa, second in new hampshire. joe biden realized that i was not for him. we see pete buttigieg doing well for right now. iowa is in february, so a lot could change. i think joe biden is putting a lot of his eggs in a south carolina basket. anjust does not want to have embarrassing show in iowa, which is why he is going on this bus tour. we see from his numbers, he is having a rough time in iowa and new hampshire. david: is fourth-place embarrassing for the vice president? hard for theuld be vice president to stomach a fourth-place finish in iowa. like any other candidate, he needs to continue to raise money and have momentum, a second or first place finish in iowa, and that is not guaranteed. he has to be careful over the next 7, 8 days to not have a lot of gaffes, to sound like he is something that can contest president trump, should he be the nominee in 2020. that means he has to really work hard and build confidence among iowa democrats. that is a

pete buttigieg, not a lot of polls we've had in iowa. but those that we have had, if you average them together pete buttigieg leads in iowa. bernie sanders close behind imine second. biden again very close here but back in third place, warren in fourth place but really almost a four way jumble thereof candidates within 6 points of each other between first and fourth place. and then by the way amy klobuchar further back here but registering at 6% here, starting to get more media attention, more press. obviously someone from a neighboring state in minnesota, so a question there klobuchar perhaps will be able to move up in iowa. we talk all the time about what iowa is so important. small state, not a let of delegates. well, the word for it, the term for it was coined back in 1980 and he told the world i have the big mow, meaning momentum. if you're a winner you get a lot of out of that. if you're a loser, that can hurt your campaign nationally, too. so that is the question in iowa what comes out of it. but take a look here. past iowa races,

we have one more before voters in iowa head for the polls. she's back in iowa before the swing. she's still only around 4%. like you said, there are surprises, but can you get from 4% to the winner or second place, i don't know. >> she's the second choice for a lot of candidates. when you look at the state polling in iowa, consistently it's buttigieg voters, klobuchar, sometimes it's warren, klobuchar, biden, klobuchar. so she sees opportunity if in the next six weeks she can take those second choice numbers for her and turn them into first numbers. she has one thing going in her favor. we've seen this cycle after cycle. there is always someone who peaks late and just at the right time. they hit the moment where most voters, not only in iowa but around the country, are really starting to tune in in a serious way and look at these candidates as not just people on the debate stage or people they see in an ad but people who would go up against the incumbent and could become president of the united states. >> she's trying to make the case iowa gave us barack obama to the left of hil
