so i am a sophomore at the university of iowa. who is studying political science, environmental plan and policy and economics. i grew up in a house with with parents who were both in the field of early childhood education. they're both educators who understood the importance of play and exploration for the growth of children. the children in their care, which included myself and my younger brother, who is here today, were fortunate to have a lot of outdoor time at day care. we would make pud pies and plant seeds and go on exploations to local parks. these types of adventures were pivotal in establishing my deep gratitude for natural spaces. when i was in third grade, my family moved from des moines to de corpscorpsa, iowa. we hiked and fished and biked. throughout this time is when we started to learn about climate change and science classes. we kind of learned the basics but we didn't understand that humans had an -- such an impact on their rate at which the climate was changing. as a child i kind of accepted that that's the way

and vermont, and i am sure in iowa. we have long lines of people in their cars waiting for emergency food boxes. people would never ask for that kind of help before. that was going on all over america. we have come a long way and ending those food lines. we have cut unemployment in half. wages are going up. we have a long way to go, but let's remember where we were and the progress that we have made. [applause] and let me tell you what else we have accomplished. as a result of the direct payments that were made during the american rescue plan to working class families in vermont, in iowa, and all across this country. as a result of the 300 dollar per month payment that working parents are now receiving for their young children, we have reduced childhood poverty in the united states by 50%! [applause] that is an extraordinary accomplishment. the kids are our future, and as the richest country in the history of the world, we should not have the highest rate of childhood poverty of almost any major nation on earth. we are

iowa is an aging state. vermont is an aging state. the nation is aging, and whether people have severe disabilities or whether they are just getting old, we have millions of people who would prefer to stay in their own homes, get care in their homes rather than be forced into a nursing home. this bill in an unprecedented way will put a significant amount of money into a home health care and pay those workers a living wage. [applause] now as many of you know, the united states the only major country on earth that does not guarantee health care to all people as a human right. we are the only one. we pay by far the highest amount of money per person for health care, somewhere around $10,000, and get 90 million people are uninsured or underinsured. we paid the highest price is in the world for prescription drugs, and up to 60,000 people a year died because they do not get to a doctor on time. my own view, i am speaking only for myself, my own view is that health care is a human rights, not a -- a human right, not a privilege, that we need

or it could be a matchup of my iowa and northern iowa football. in either case i meet with iowans, where they are and what is on their mind. during this past state work period, i had multiple conversations with farmers about what is on their minds. at the u.n.i. iowa state game, i had a conversation with a friend but also a fellow farmer, ron hack. he farms near perry, iowa, where he talked to me at this football game about concerns about president biden's tax plan. ron followed up with an e-mail to me which i want to share with my colleagues on the floor since this is a thing that i've consistently heard across the state. at the end of my speech, mr. president, i'd like to put this e-mail in the record. i'm going to refer to parts of that e-mail, but i think you ought to hear it directly from ron hack, so that will be at the end, just read it, but here's my summation of it. ron started the e-mail by saying, quote, iowa farmers have a problem with exploding land prices coupled with biden's increasing death and transfer taxes. end of quote. but to

i live with my husband and our three children in northwest iowa. but we also work closely with my brother in southeast south dakota. together across three locations we milk 15,000 cows. most milk in the united states is regulated through federal milk marketing orders, ffmos. this system was put in place decades ago to prevent dairy processors from making one dairy farmer bid against the other. in other words, ffmos promise dairy producers that if their milk is as good as their neighbors, they will be pay the same price. but that promise now seems to be broken. although these conditions have benefitted me personally in the last year, i am advocating for change because i want a fair system where everyone can compete on a level playing field in. 2020 cheese prices were very high. we shipped to a cheese processor so our milk check was high and we were able to pay down debt and grow our operations. meanwhile some of our neighbors were forced to implement cost-cutting measures to stay afloat. i have spoken to dairy farmers all across iowa who is struggli
